SETDA Serving, supporting and representing state education technology leaders

The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit membership association launched by state education agency leaders in 2001 to serve, support and represent their emerging interests and needs with respect to the use of technology for teaching, learning, and school operations. Our 2017-2020 Strategic Plan builds on SETDA’s 15-year record of leading and learni

ng in the Digital Age and embraces the shift in education towards leveraging digital tools to maximize learning for each individual student. A major premise of the new plan involves leveraging technology for learning as a way to both support educators in their commitment to personalize learning for all students, and to provide a clear, common pathway to equity of education for all students. The priorities outlined in the new plan include: advocacy, state action, strategic partnerships, professional learning, communications, and operations. These priorities align with SETDA’s vision to lead, inspire and empower the education community through its work and are framed within the following set of value commitments:

*Serving every U.S. State and territorial education agency

*Maintaining a future-focused, holistic view on how to leverage technology for learning

*Fostering collaboration among SETDA members, strategic partners, and other education leaders and policymakers

*Taking action on the important issues facing public education

*Ensuring equity of access to all facets of learning

Thanks for being such an important part of our SETDA community. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

Julia Legg works tirelessly to advocate for students in West Virginia and does everything in her power to make sure they have the best technical experience to enhance their learning.

She takes on this goal both in her state and at the national level, participating in multiple national associations, including preparing the applications for the state for both Categories of E-Rate and the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF).

Without her efforts, many students across West Virginia would have been without access to learning technologies, especially in this new post-pandemic environment. On behalf of the entire SETDA community, it is our honor to name Julia Legg as our recipient of the 2021 State Leader Award (SLY).

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Utah was forced to support a rapid transition to online learning in a matter of days before restarting school and learning for over 660,000 students.

For these, and many more reasons, we are proud to name her as the recipient of the 2021 State Policymaker of the Year Award.

Please join us in congratulating Kristina Ishmael on her well-deserved appointment to serve as Deputy Director for the Office of Educational Technology (OET) at the U.S. Department of Education.

Kristina has been part of the SETDA family since she was at the Nebraska Department of Education and earlier this year rejoined SETDA to work on special projects. She will continue to play a vital role in shaping a federal agenda that empowers teachers, advances educational equity, and supports our nation’s students as we reimagine the role of technology in the post-pandemic classroom.

The SETDA family wishes her every success in her newest endeavor and she has our enthusiastic support as she works with Secretary Cardona to provide more equitable access and opportunities for all learners.

After more than three years of research, data collection, and debate, we're excited to share the EdTech Genome Project's report—including a first-of-its-kind framework designed to help educators document and share their experiences with edtech in their unique contexts.

Mapping the edtech genome is a critical step in our sector-wide effort to help educators make better-informed decisions about how to select and implement edtech, and it’s been an honor to be a part of the journey.
