Natural Dyes & Cultural Ties: How People Across the Globe Enhance Fabrics
Youth 6–12
with instructor Karin Jones

Join youth instructor Karin for a two-day journey into the sustainable world of natural dyes! Using safe, natural sources like turmeric, onion skins, and indigo, we’ll transform plain fabric into vibrant works of art. Students will explore cultural resist-dyeing traditions used around the world to create stunning patterns:

Shibori (Japan): Fold, twist, and clamp fabric for crisp geometric designs or linear patterns.
Bandhani (India): Intricate knotting of tiny sections of fabric to form circular patterns.
Batik & Tsutsugaki (Indonesia/Japan): Learn how wax and paste-resist methods inspire modern interpretations.
Ice Dyeing (North America): Experiment with melting ice and dye powder for soft, organic effects.

We’ll cover how to source natural dyes, apply safe dyeing practices, and reveal one-of-a-kind patterns. Students will leave with several completed projects—such as a bandana or t-shirt—and a deeper appreciation for the art of creating color from nature.
