With the Fourth of July just around the corner, celebration is top-of-mind. Here at the Glen Lake Association (GLA), our constant focus is safeguarding the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed. Follow our best practices for fireworks to prioritize human and environmental health:

🎆 Shop for low-perchlorate or “greener” fireworks that contain fewer heavy metals and toxic chemicals, or consider alternatives like LED sparklers, low-noise fireworks, and glow sticks.
🎆 Familiarize yourself with local fireworks ordinances (especially Cleveland, Empire, Glen Arbor, and Kasson Townships and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore).
🎆 Designate a safe “light-off” space away from trees, buildings, powerlines, children, and pets—and always keep eye protectants and a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.
🎆 Join the GLA’s Walk-Your-Shoreline cleanup event on Sunday, July 5 to help preserve the watershed’s wellbeing—details coming soon!

They say time flies when you’re having fun—and they’re right! It’s hard to believe we’re almost halfway through 2026, and we’ve been having a blast putting the work in to protect the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed. But to keep doing the work, we need your help.

Most of our operating budget at the Glen Lake Association (GLA) comes from membership dues. As a registered nonprofit organization, we depend heavily on this funding to continue our critical work in maintaining and protecting the watershed.

Help strengthen and safeguard the watershed with us:
💧Renew your existing GLA membership or join the GLA as a new member at: support.glenlakeassociation.org/membership
💧Go above and beyond by sending the GLA an additional contribution at: support.glenlakeassociation.org/donate
💧Share this post with someone who cares about the watershed as much as we do ❀

If you’re back at Glen Lake after wintering somewhere warm, you may be surprised to see some changes to your shoreline. But don’t worry, Nancy Drew, it’s no mystery!

Join us Friday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Glen Lake Community Library for a community talk about shoreline erosion and mitigation strategies with experts Rob Karner, the Glen Lake Association’s (GLA) watershed biologist, and Nathan D. Griswold, president, founder, and senior design and project manager at Inhabitect. In the meantime, check out our recent blog about ice breakup, shorelines, and free consultations from the GLA! https://www.glenlakeassociation.org/ice-breakup-and-your-shoreline/

Our scientists use evidence-based methods and techniques to monitor, test, and protect the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed. But to do that, we need support and resources from our community partners. Thank you, Glen Craft Marina & Resort owners Conor and Shannon McCahill, who have donated a seasonal boat slip (again!) for the GLA’s research vessel: the RV Sarah. With Glen Craft Marina & Resort’s support, we can continue our critical work to protect the watershed.

Check out our 2025 Impact Report to see how your support helped the Glen Lake Association (GLA) achieve tangible outcomes in maintaining and protecting the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed.

Last year, the GLA treated more than 70 sites across Little and Big Glen Lakes, Fisher Lake, and Brooks Lake for invasive plants–such as coltsfoot, yellow iris, purple loosestrife, and phragmites–that push out native plants and reduce water quality. Since 2015, coltsfoot sites have reduced by 68%. This year, we’ve added the Crystal River to our invasive plant tracking and removal efforts!

Check out our other measurable results in the rest of our report at:https://www.glenlakeassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/GLA-2025-Impact-Report-Digital-05-2026.pdf

Join our watershed biologists on a fun and educational hands-on tour of Glen Lake on our Discovery Boat. đŸ”ŽđŸš€ As you cruise along the water, you’ll learn how area lakes were formed, what influences water quality, how to keep the watershed healthy, and so much more.

We are proud to now offer the Discovery Boat program completely free of charge!

Registration is still required, and tickets run out fast. Learn more and reserve your tickets (for anyone ages 8+) at: https://www.glenlakeassociation.org/discovery-boat-tours/

This huge invasive koi was recently spotted and filmed by community member Cindy Chormann Hann.

While koi may be beautiful, they are an invasive species that can harm the ecosystem by uprooting native aquatic plants, stirring up sediments, and competing with native fish.

We need your help tracking them.

Each koi has unique colors and markings, making photos and videos incredibly valuable. By comparing sightings, our removal team can identify individual fish, estimate how many remain in the watershed, and monitor whether the population is growing or shrinking.

If you spot a koi, please take a clear photo or video and send it, along with the location and time of the sighting, to [email protected].

Memorial Day weekend is commonly known as the unofficial start of summer. It’s also the opening weekend for the GLA Boat Wash! đŸš€

Starting Friday, May 22, our boat wash station at 7075 W. Day Forest Rd. is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 7p.m., and the self-service power washer is available 24/7 outside of our normally staffed hours.

This is our first line of defense against halting the introduction of harmful aquatic invasive species into Glen Lake and other area water bodies, including Fisher Lake and the Crystal River. The heated pressure wash also kills VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia)–a viral fish disease present in nearby Lake Michigan waters.

Thank you for washing your watercraft every time before launching if you’ve recently had it in another body of water!
