Everyone talks about spring cleaning, but fall lawn care is what really makes a difference when it comes to watershed health. Lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste, and fertilizers can all negatively impact water quality when improperly tended. Whether you’re right on the water or living upland, the GLA has super-simple, watershed-friendly fall lawn care tips to help preserve watershed health (and your property value).

Attention, recreators! Our Boat Wash will remain open throughout October to help prevent the spread of invasive species in the watershed, but please note our updated hours:
Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m-12:00 p.m.
Friday-Sunday 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

We’ll see you on the water! 🌊

This summer, we stepped up our watershed health monitoring by expanding our invasive species survey to the Crystal River! This data will help us take action against plants like yellow iris and purple loosestrife that threaten natural habitats and water quality.

But those aren’t the only plants we’re after. Check out our blog to see which offenders we’re on the lookout for so you can spot them, too. You can also ask the GLA to come survey your property and remove invasives on your behalf.

Looking for an easy way to volunteer for the GLA? Send us your photography of the watershed, especially from this year! One of the best ways we can protect the watershed is by sharing its story. Whether you’re a full-time resident or not, you’re part of those chapters. Send your photos to [email protected]. Bonus points if you share a tidbit or two about a memory to go with it.

Check it out! Last month, we conducted drone scans to re-check Big and Little Glen Lakes for Eurasian watermilfoil, a highly aggressive invasive plant that threatens water quality, native species, and recreation. These flight paths were established in 2023 and continue to provide us with critical data in our fight to protect the watershed.

Anglers, welcome to your fall fishing season! While the temperatures may be cooling down, the threat of invasive species is ever-present. Help us protect the Glen Lake/Crystal River watershed by remembering to do the following when moving between different bodies of water:

CLEAN visible aquatic plants, mud, and animals off your vessel and equipment. We recommend a stop at our free Boat Wash before and after entering the watershed.

DRAIN your motor and other water-containing devices before leaving the watershed.

DRY everything with a towel or air-dry for five days before setting sail again.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also recommends anglers DISPOSE of unwanted bait, worms, and fish parts in the garbage, not in the water.

The GLA’s CBMP is one of our strongest tools for protecting the watershed against EWM, an invasive and highly aggressive aquatic plant species. 🌿 Helping is easy! Just walk your shoreline a couple times a week and report back to us with any interesting findings.
