A really good conversation about local journalism last night at Washington and Lee University in Lexington. It was especially nice to see so many VPA members represented on the “Meet the Press” panel, including Megan Schabel of Cardinal News, Angilee Shah of Charlottesville Tomorrow, Darryl Woodson of The News-Gazette, Lexington, Va, Doug Harwood of The Rockbridge Advocate, and Chris Coates of Lee Enterprises, along with David Seidel at WVTF Music and RADIO IQ

They shared their perspectives on the landscape of local journalism, how newsrooms make coverage decisions and some of the issues they’re facing in their communities.

Thanks to Eric Deggans, Knight Professor of Journalism and Media Ethics at W&L, for leading the conversation and Washington and Lee University for bringing these Virginia news leaders together!

The News-Gazette, Lexington, Va celebrated 225 years of local journalism Thursday, Aug. 13 with a birthday celebration at The Livery.

The newspaper traces its roots to 1801. The Lexington Gazette and Rockbridge County News, two predecessors of today’s newspaper, merged in 1962 to form The News-Gazette. Four generations of the Paxton family have helped guide the newspaper during its long history.

The newspaper also has longstanding ties to the Virginia Press Association. Elihu H. Barclay, editor of the Lexington Gazette, helped found VPA and served as its first president from 1881-1884. Current News-Gazette publisher Matt Paxton IV is also a former VPA board president, serving during the 1998-99 term.

Pictured left are Matt and his wife, Lynne, celebrating The News-Gazette’s 225th birthday, and on the right, another of Paxton speaking with well-wishers.
