Milk River Catfish Classic

Milk River Catfish Classic Come enjoy one of the largest Catfish Tournaments in the country! The Classic is the "grand daddy" of the Montana Cats Tour.

It was started in 2000 by Field Staff member Brenner Flaten and his friend Luke Morehouse. Over the course of the past 24 years, the Classic has grown into the premier catfish tournament in the region. It is held annually on the 1st Saturday of June in Glasgow, MT. Boundaries stretch from the Mouth of the Milk near Nashua/Fort Peck to the Bjornberg Bridge near S**o. It is a night-time event that a

nnually boasts a full 80-team field and over $15,000 in guaranteed cash and prizes. The popularity of this event is evident when the tournament fills up six months in advance and over 500 people regularly show up for the famous "midnight weigh-ins" in downtown Glasgow.

🚨 Irrigation Season Alert – Milk River Project 🚨

The Milk River Joint Board voted last night to begin irrigation deliveries from Fresno Reservoir in May. Irrigation districts and Reclamation pump contracts served by Fresno will be allowed to turn on starting May 15, and acreage below Nelson Reservoir releases will start May 10.

The current plan is to operate for up to 40 days, through June 24, or shut off sooner once districts have been covered once. This will be followed by a temporary shutoff period to allow Fresno Reservoir storage to recover, with the goal of supporting a second irrigation beginning in mid-July.

Conservation will be critical during this first irrigation period. Districts will be limited to one irrigation per crop, with no second irrigations allowed during the first turn-on period. The goal is to preserve enough water to make a meaningful second irrigation possible later in the season, with some help from weather and runoff.

This plan is based on current conditions and may change depending on upcoming weather, runoff, and infrastructure constraints. The Board plans to meet again in June to reassess reservoir levels and determine next steps.

Let’s Go!!!! Let that water 💦 flow. The Mighty Milk. The lifeline of the Hi-Line. 👊

Well friends—today is the day!!

Today, the St. Mary Canal is officially back online following the replacement of two major siphon projects, thanks to an incredible team of contractors, engineers, a dedicated tribal workforce, tribal permitting and regulatory offices, and some of the best subcontractors around. While there is still work ahead—site reclamation, finishing touches, and working through the final punch list—the water is flowing again.

I want to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to everyone involved. They have worked tirelessly to get us to this point, putting in long days and pushing through challenges to restore operations—not only at the failed St. Mary Siphon, but also at the Hall’s Coulee Siphon.

To put it into perspective, these two projects were accomplished in just 658 calendar days—or ~504 on-the-job workdays—since the failure on June 17, 2024.

That is no small feat. Truly impressive work all around. A pretty exciting message to see in our water operations inbox this morning, don’t you think?
