Attention agricultural producers, landowners, and conservationists!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today the 2026 enrollment periods for both the Continuous and General Conservation Reserve Program, marking 40 years since the program was first open for enrollment.

Offers will be accepted for Continuous CRP from February 12-March 20, 2026 and the General CRP signup will run from March 9-April 17, 2026. States with over 100,000 CRP acres expiring this year are Iowa, Washington, Illinois, and Kansas. Make sure you reach out to your local Pheasants Forever or Quail Forever biologist or visit the Habitat Help Desk at the 2026 National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic to learn more about CRP and the signup process.

Have you heard about prairie strips? 🌻

They’re small areas of native prairie plants planted within or along crop fields that help reduce soil erosion, filter runoff, and support pollinators and wildlife.

Illinois farmers are beginning to see the benefits through the USDA’s CRP CP-43 program, which encourages adding prairie habitat back into working fields.

Macoupin County could benefit in a big way — our rolling farmland and strong ag community make this area ideal for practices that protect soil, improve water quality, and boost biodiversity without taking much land out of production.

Even local favorites like the bobwhite quail, whose numbers have dropped over the years, can find new nesting and feeding habitat in these prairie strips. 🐦

It’s a simple, science-based step that helps the land — and the wildlife — thrive. 🌱

Prairie strips are notably not a very well-known conservation practice, despite their many benefits.
