Burn Ban in Effect — September 5 through September 8

A burn ban is effective immediately for the unincorporated areas of Crawford County and will remain in place until 8:30 AM Tuesday, September 8.

While the Grassland Fire Danger Index is currently moderate, extreme heat and dry conditions can cause fires to burn more intensely and become harder to control. These conditions also place additional stress on firefighters and emergency responders working in already dangerous heat.

This burn ban is being issued for the safety of our communities and responders.

The Girard Firefighters Association is proud to announce the purchase of 18 new sets of structural firefighting gear for the Girard Fire Department.

This purchase was made possible through grant funding along with matching funds from the Public Safety Sales Tax. These 18 new sets, combined with the five new sets of gear received through the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office in July 2025, represent a significant investment in the safety and protection of our firefighters.

Over the past year, the department has also been fortunate to utilize additional grant opportunities and public safety funding to purchase battery-operated extrication equipment and other essential firefighting and rescue equipment.

We want to sincerely thank the citizens of Girard for your continued support of the Girard Fire Department and for supporting the Public Safety Sales Tax. We believe it is important for our community to see exactly where these tax dollars are going directly toward equipment that improves firefighter safety, emergency response capabilities, and the service we provide to our community.

Your support allows us to continue replacing aging equipment, improving our capabilities, and providing our firefighters with the tools they need to safely and effectively serve Girard.

As Chief of the Girard Fire Department, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank our dedicated volunteer firefighters on National Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day August 18th.

Our volunteers give countless hours to this organization time spent away from their families, attending training, responding to emergencies, and serving our community whenever the call comes in. When the call comes out, they answer.

Your dedication, sacrifice, professionalism, and commitment do not go unnoticed. I am extremely appreciative of each and every one of you and the important role you play in making the Girard Fire Department the organization it is today.

Thank you for the countless hours of training. Thank you for showing up in our community’s time of need. Thank you for supporting one another and always being willing to serve.

Thank you,for all that you do. Job well done!

🎒 WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL! 🚌

Tomorrow is the first day of the 2026–2027 school year in Girard!

As everyone gets back into the school routine, please allow a little extra time during your morning commute. The first few days of school can always be hectic.

Please remember to:

• Slow down in school zones
• Watch carefully at crosswalks
• Be alert around school bus stops
• Stop for buses loading and unloading students
• Watch for children walking or riding bikes to school
• Put the phone down and stay focused behind the wheel

Let’s all do our part to make sure our students get to and from school safely.

The Girard Fire Department wishes all students, teachers, administrators, and staff a safe and successful 2026–2027 school year!
