In an emergency, your first choice should always be to call 911. But did you know you can also text 911 if you can’t speak or it’s not safe to make a call?

Text-to-911 is a safe and discreet way to reach a dispatcher when speaking out loud isn’t possible. This can be helpful in situations involving medical emergencies, fires, crashes, or when you need to stay quiet for safety reasons.

If you text 911:
• Use clear, direct language
• Include your location right away
• Avoid abbreviations, slang, or emojis
• Answer the dispatcher’s questions promptly

Dispatchers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whether you call or text.

Remember: Call if you can. Text if you can’t.

As fireworks sales begin and we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, the Girard Fire Department would like to remind everyone to practice firework safety within the city limits.

• Always have a water source nearby, such as a garden hose or bucket of water, when discharging fireworks.
• After fireworks have been used, soak them thoroughly in water to ensure they are completely extinguished before disposal.
• Never place hot fireworks, spent fireworks, or smoldering debris into a trash can, as they can reignite and start a fire.
• Never point, aim, or throw fireworks at another person.
• Always supervise children and use fireworks responsibly.

We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation. By following these simple safety precautions, we can help prevent injuries and fires while enjoying the holiday festivities.

From all of us at the Girard Fire Department, have a safe and happy Independence Day!

A complex of thunderstorms is expected to move through the area tonight into Tuesday morning.

These storms may lead to additional flooding, especially in areas that have already received heavy rainfall.

There is also a risk for severe thunderstorms. The primary concern will be damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph.

Secure loose outdoor items, allow extra travel time if you’ll be out late or early Tuesday, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
