We have a College Student working with us this summer!!
Catherine is home for break from college and is spending time at our organization. She is helping with programs and is a great asset.
Sharing her experience is a part of her role.
This is her report for her second week:
Week 2 (June 3,4,6)
This week I had the opportunity to be a part of three different events here at
Thrive 10:10, all of which reflected the core mission of this organization.
At the beginning of the week, I assisted with a class talking about maintaining a positive mindset throughout each day. It is a simple concept, yet so hard to maintain (I know from personal experience). However, through small tasks like writing down a couple of sentences that remind oneself of their own worth and reminiscing on personal accomplishments, it provided a beautiful moment for reflection. In a way, it was comforting to know that everyone struggles with self doubt or negative thoughts at times, yet powerful to be in a room that helps encourage a positive mindset. This class taught me that everyone struggles with this topic, but everyone is capable and worth it. I not only helped others be reminded of this, but I was reminded as well.
The next day was extremely fun. We discussed different types of tea and I developed a general knowledge of how tea is grown and made. After being able to sample four different types of tea, we began to discuss how this topic is comparable to our lives. One fact I did not know before this was that tea derives from one plant: Camellia sinensis, all producing what we know as white, green, and black teas. Each of these three teas is harvested, oxidized, and processed differently, producing different levels of caffeine, taste, and color. It is truly an art, one that I never came to appreciate until recently.
From this discussion, my personal takeaway is that every human is different, whether it is race, religion, political standpoint, economic standpoint, or upbringing, but all of us are a part of a community. We all have something in common. From what I have learned so far from Thrive 10:10, no matter the differences, there are profound concepts with which we all struggle. Being able to help one another recognize and grow together is what it's all about.
Lastly, at the end of the week, I was able to help with the Ruth’s Boutique event. This event created a great impact on my heart. No matter the age or other differences, everyone was invited and welcomed. We provided lunch, and the individuals were able to take what they needed from the boutique, such as personal hygiene products, feminine products, books, and more. This event not only helped create a supportive community, but also helped people in need. After talking to the individuals and seeing the smiles on their faces as I bagged their products, I knew that what this organization is doing is truly incredible.
These three events truly represent what Thrive 10:10 is all about: community, personal growth, and connections. I am proud to say I am a part of this and can not wait to learn and do more.
