Gilroy Police Officers' Association The board members act as liaisons between the officers and the command staff when dealing with personnel issues.

The board members serve the association by conducting contract negotiations, scheduling of association sponsored events, maintaining and improving department morale. Board members are knowledgeable in the Peace Officer Bill of Rights, and they monitor internal affairs investigations to ensure officer's rights are not violated. 110 years ago, the Marine Corps Reserve was created for a war the United States had not entered yet.

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Naval Appropriations Act on August 29, 1916. The logic was simple: if America was pulled into World War I, it would need trained Marines ready to move without months of lead time. Congress built the Reserve to guarantee that.

It worked. Reserve Marines went on to serve in every major American conflict since, from Belleau Wood to Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside disaster response, humanitarian missions, and community work like Toys for Tots.

Today it is the largest command in the Marine Corps, roughly 40,000 drilling Marines strong, made up of people balancing full civilian lives with full military readiness.

Members of this association do the same thing every week. We know exactly what that takes.

The most dangerous part of a child's school day happens before the first bell and after the last one.

NHTSA data shows more school-age pedestrians are killed between 6 and 8 in the morning and between 3 and 5 in the afternoon than during any other hours of the day. Those are exactly the windows when kids are walking to stops, cutting across parking lots, and heading home with headphones in.

A few things worth saying out loud to any child walking to school this year. Use the sidewalk whenever there is one. If there is not, walk facing traffic so you can see what is coming. Cross at corners and marked crossings, never between parked cars. And put the phone away for the length of the walk, because a driver who is not paying attention needs you to be the one who is.

Our members will be on those routes when the year starts. We are glad to be there.

There is no medal a service member volunteers for. The Purple Heart is the one nobody wants to earn.

It is awarded for being wounded or killed in action against an enemy of the United States. Not for valor. Not for leadership. For bearing the cost.

Established by George Washington on August 7, 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit and revived as the Purple Heart in 1932, it is the oldest military decoration still awarded in the United States. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor estimates roughly 1.8 million have been given out, though records from the early years are incomplete. Approximately 430,000 were awarded posthumously.

Many members of this association are veterans. Some carry this decoration. Some lost friends who earned it the hardest way possible.

Today, and every day, we honor them.

The Gilroy Police Officers’ Association Proudly Endorses Fred Tovar for Gilroy City Council, District 4

The Gilroy Police Officers’ Association (GPOA) is proud to formally announce our endorsement of Fred Tovar for Gilroy City Council, District 4.

Throughout his time serving our community, Fred has proven to be a steadfast champion for public safety, law enforcement officers, and the well-being of all Gilroy residents.

He consistently demonstrates a deep understanding of the challenges our police officers face daily and remains committed to ensuring our department has the resources, support, and leadership needed to keep Gilroy safe.

Fred’s dedication to law enforcement and community service is exemplified by his receipt of the 2025 Gilroy Police Officers’ Association Annual Stanley P. Delvin Award in December 2025.

This prestigious award is presented in recognition of outstanding service rooted in the core values that Stan Delvin embodied: Loyalty, Dedication, and Humility. Fred lives these values every day through his collaborative approach, active listening, and unwavering commitment to our town.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of retired Soledad Police Department K-9 "Twister", who passed away peacefully at the age of 14, surrounded by his loving family.

K-9 Twister began his service with the Gilroy Police Department in 2013 and lateraled to the Soledad Police Department in 2018 where he faithfully served until his retirement in 2019. Throughout his distinguished career, Twister exemplified loyalty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting both officers and the citizens he served.

During his years of service, Twister apprehended nine felony suspects, conducted hundreds of narcotics searches and investigations. Among his most notable accomplishments was assisting the DEA in the seizure of five kilograms of co***ne during a traffic stop on US Highway 101 in Soledad, a significant case that demonstrated his extraordinary capabilities and dedication.

"Twister" also served five years supporting tactical operations and spent three years tracking individuals, helping officers safely locate suspects and those in need. His keen instincts and partnership made him an invaluable member of the departments he served.

While Twister's accomplishments were remarkable, those who had the privilege of working alongside him will remember that you could not get near his patrol car because he made it known IT WAS HIS! He was more than a police dog to Sergeant Contreras; he was a trusted partner, a protector, and a cherished member of both his family and the Soledad Police Department family.

Although Twister's watch has come to an end, his legacy will continue to live through the lives he touched, the officers he protected, and the communities he faithfully served. His dedication and service will never be forgotten. May we always remember his faithful service and the lasting impact he made on both Soledad and Gilroy police departments.

Rest easy, Twister. Thank you for your years of faithful service. Your watch is over, but your legacy will remain forever.

236 years ago today, the Coast Guard started with ten ships and a tariff problem.

That is not a joke. When Congress authorized the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790, the mission was collecting duties and stopping smugglers. What it became is something else entirely.

In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to create the modern Coast Guard, and the mission expanded to include the work most people associate with it now. Search and rescue. Icebreaking. Drug interdiction. Port security. Environmental response. Eleven statutory missions in total, carried out by roughly 40,000 active duty members, 7,000 reservists, and thousands of auxiliary volunteers.

It is the smallest branch of the armed forces and the one most likely to be the reason someone makes it home.

Happy birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard from everyone at this association.
