It is a gift to walk the Tom Howe Conservation area and the Joe Urner trail in the spring. The wood frogs croaking, sound of water running, and sighting of migrating birds are a balm for the soul. Many thanks to all who have helped conserve land in our beautiful town.
* Unfortunately I only had my phone with me- if anyone recognizes the water fowl in the last photo, please ID. Thank you!

Unfortunately it’s apparently not possible to edit photo captions in à post, and I sincerely apologize about my error in stating that the photo of the Kelley Conservation area is on the wrong pond: it is definitely on Rollins Pond!

Note to all registered Gilmanton voters: If you value all the natural beauty Gilmanton has to offer, please make sure to vote YES on Article 18 during the Town election this coming Tuesday , March 10th. This will ensure that the Gilmanton Conservation Commission (GCC) continues to receive 50% of the Land Use Change tax that is charged when a landowner takes land out of Current Use, usually for the purposes of developing it. Those funds greatly assist the GCC in conserving other land in Gilmanton so that all who appreciate driving by our beautiful views, getting out on the trails (whether skiing, hiking or snowmobiling), and enjoying the flowers , birds, and other wildlife can continue to do so. Many thanks in advance for your support.
Edit: the initial caption re: Rollins Pond alluding to the Kelley Conservation Area erroneously stated it was on Shellcamp! Cannot believe I did that and truly apologize.

Many, many thanks to all who came to the Town Deliberative Session yesterday, listened, spoke up, and voted for preserving the allocation of 50% of the Land Use Change Tax for conservation of all the many natural beauties of Gilmanton. Next step: vote in March!

Gilmanton voters who care about land conservation, please attend the Deliberative Session that will be held at the Gilmanton School this Saturday, January 31 at 10 AM.
There is a proposed warrant article that would, in essence, defund the Gilmanton Conservation Commission (the GCC) by taking away the 50% of the Land Use Change Tax (LUCT) which is now allocated to the GCC. * The LUCT is paid by land owners when they take their property out of Current Use, usually for the purposes of developing it.
In 2024, when the Gilmanton Land Trust had the opportunity to conserve the Kelley farm land on Rollins Pond (in the photos below), one key factor enabling us to accomplish this was the contribution of the Town, via the GCC , to pay for the “soft costs”- including the survey and title search. The GCC was only able to do that due to funds collected from the LUCT. This change would greatly hamper future conservation work in our town. Please help us vote to amend this article at the meeting on Saturday.
*Towns surrounding us all contribute either 50% or 100% of that change tax to their conservation work.
