Bringing Callie from Polk Co to the forefront again with the hope this will catch the eye of the right person and this sweet girl can move forward.
Please share her story. Your share may be the key to her future.
WHAT NEXT???
Barely over 2 years old, Callie is just beginning her life. Her time on earth until very recently has been nothing but fear, flight and babies.
Callie came into “the system” as a stray with puppies. She was terrified of everyone and everything. Her response to her fear was to run, and her fear provided the adrenaline to enable her to perform some rather impressive escapes. Her final flee, a bit after her puppies had been weaned, was the last straw. The shelter could not contain her; she had no place secure to go. She was given 24 hours to get out or she would be euthanized. We had her puppies, but had been told she was adopted, when in reality she was on the lam. A safe harbor was procured where she could decompress, be evaluated and assessed, and hopefully begin to learn to trust again. It went better than expected. Callie latched on to one of their techs like a puppy who just found mom’s food supply, and the healing began.
From a dog who froze upon approach and pancaked IF you could get her to even take a step, submissive peed in place and went belly up with eye contact, Callie is now allowing some interaction with staff people other than “her person,” trots alongside in rhythm on a jog, has successfully maintained composure when left in a backyard (privacy fenced) while her person left her view, and pees and poops on leash. There are glimpses of normalcy and peace.
Callie has been in boarding since 4/29/26. She is ready to leave boarding and continue to grow, but what will work for her? We are not sure. When this all began, she was so dire we were concerned a sanctuary might be our only possible recourse. But now we are seeing so many glimmers of light shining thru, we feel she might thrive and grow best in a home environment that encourages her to continue positive involvement, but has the patience to allow her to determine the timeline; an environment that would celebrate little victories with her. She IS still a flight risk and must be treated as such. Her escapes were made climbing chain link fencing, so for now, that fencing is not an option, nor is underground. Because of that and her history of visual triggers causing fear/flight, at this point wooden privacy fencing is the only acceptable containment. And we don’t think she is ready for busy, rambunctious young’uns.
So we are putting this out there with the hope that the right person will see this and reach out to offer Callie hope as an adopter or a long term foster/foster to adopt). To recap, she is:
Just over 2 years old;
Full grown at 50 lbs;
Fully Vetted
Zero resource guarding; gentle when taking treats/food;
Loves tough chews and bones (soft toys are weapons for destruction); extra points for peanut butter;
A favorite thing is sun worshipping or just being outside and watching nature;
Not real vocal, but when she is (to get your attention), it’s a cute little hound howl accompanied by a little prance.
