Another day and even bigger news for Red Rock Trails.

We are beyond excited to announce a powerful new partnership between the Campbell County Recreation Foundation and the Wyoming Sportsman’s Group.

To the members of WSG: Thank you for believing in the vision for Red Rock Trails and for your extraordinary donation of $108,500.00. Your generosity provides the 50% matching funds needed for CCRF to apply for the Wyoming State Trails Non-Motorized Grant.

If awarded, a total of $217,000.00 will fund Phase 1 of trail construction, bringing the Red Rock Trails one major step closer to reality, with construction possible as early as next year.

This is more than a donation. It is an investment in the future of outdoor recreation for Gillette, Campbell County, and all of Northeastern Wyoming.

We are incredibly grateful, deeply inspired, and very excited for what comes next.

We’re thrilled to share some big news: the Campbell County Commissioners have unanimously approved both the 20-year lease and the Red Rock Trails Master Plan.

This is a major milestone for outdoor recreation in Campbell County. With this approval, the full 506-acre Centennial Section is now protected as a public recreation area, and Red Rock Trails & Recreation Park is officially moving forward as a multi-use trail system for Gillette and Campbell County residents. What has long been a community vision is now real.

What this approval means

This action creates a long-term framework for CCRF to move from planning into implementation. It protects the property for public recreation, supports responsible trail development, and gives us the ability to pursue state and federal grant funding to build a sustainable, professionally designed trail system for the community.

The Red Rock Trails Master Plan was developed with extensive public input and the expertise of Pointe Strategies, the professional trail design team hired to guide the planning process. The result is a practical, community-driven plan for a trail system that is welcoming, durable, and built for long-term use.

What’s included in the plan

The master plan covers approximately 11 miles of trail, combining improved existing routes with new trail construction.

Planned features include:

Adaptive and multi-use trails for walking, hiking, running, and cycling
Mountain bike and trail running singletrack
Beginner, intermediate, and advanced trail experiences
A dedicated skills trail zone
A Kids Zone near the Northern Drive trailhead for young riders
Improved access points and trailheads
Wayfinding and signage throughout the system
Visitor amenities such as benches, dog waste stations, and bike repair infrastructure
A long-term maintenance and operations framework to keep the system sustainable
Phased implementation

The project is organized into three phases so construction can move forward as funding is secured.

Where we go from here

CCRF is already working to secure funding so that Phase 1 can begin as soon as possible, with a goal of starting in spring 2027 if funding is secured and a suitable contractor can be hired.

Current funding efforts include:

An application to the Wyoming Off-Road Trail Program
A funding request to the Wyoming Sportsman’s Group for the required 50% match
Continued pursuit of additional grant and partnership opportunities to support implementation
This approval opens the door for Red Rock Trails & Recreation Park to become one of Campbell County’s signature recreation assets: a place for families, kids, runners, walkers, mountain bikers, adaptive users, and anyone looking for accessible outdoor recreation close to home.

Thank you to the Campbell County Commissioners for their support, to everyone who participated in the public process, and to all of the community members who helped move this vision forward. Red Rock Trails & Recreation Park is happening.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our display at the Thursday Night Main Street Concert. We received some really good feedback. We also had a number of people voicing their concerns and questions about the proposed Burnt Hollow Trail System, and we want to share clear, accurate information about what this project is—and what it is not.

What the Burnt Hollow Trail System Is (and Isn’t)

Burnt Hollow is being planned as a non-motorized, human-powered trail system. That means:

No dirt bikes
No ATVs or side-by-sides
No motorized use
This will not be another Weston Hills-style motorized area. The trails are specifically intended for activities like hiking, mountain biking, and other quiet, human-powered recreation.

Why Motorized Use Is Not Allowed

The project area falls within a Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

An SRMA is a designation used by the BLM to guide how recreation happens in certain areas. These areas are managed with a specific recreation focus, which can include limiting certain uses to protect resources, reduce user conflict, and create a better overall experience.

In the case of Burnt Hollow, the SRMA designation supports non-motorized recreation, which is why the trail system is being designed accordingly. This ensures the area remains quiet, safe, and accessible for a wide range of users.

Wildlife and Hunting Concerns

We also understand concerns about how this project could impact wildlife and hunting.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is already involved and has reached out to participate in the planning and design process. Their role is to help ensure that:

Wildlife habitat is respected and protected
Trail alignments avoid sensitive areas
Any potential impacts are minimized
Trail systems like this are carefully planned, not randomly placed. Input from Game and Fish, along with the BLM, helps ensure the project is designed responsibly with wildlife in mind.

It’s also worth noting that well-designed trail systems often concentrate use into defined areas, which can actually reduce widespread disturbance compared to unmanaged use.

Moving Forward

This project is still in the planning and design phase, and public input will be an important part of that process. The goal is to create something that works for the community while respecting the land, wildlife, and existing uses.

We appreciate the conversation and want to continue providing clear information as the project moves forward.
