Beginning in the late 19th century, "Entertainment Series" were an integral part of bringing the larger world to rural western Massachusetts. From Broadway and opera singers like Todd Duncan and Marian Anderson, to folk and blues musicians like Joni Mitchell and Taj Mahal, to modern rock bands like Phish, the list of music and spoken word artists who've performed at the school is prodigious. Here is a single example.

Makeba and Chad Mitchell Trio Star in First of Fall Concerts
A new concert series for the enjoyment of students, parents and friends of the schools will highlight the fall term of the Northfield Schools. The enlarged series presents three separate concerts instead of the usual one.
Miriam Makeba and the Chad Mitchell Trio starred in the first concert, presented in the Auditorium on September 30.
The Chad Mitchell trio sang their selection of folk-songs first. Three, of their most enjoyable numbers were the humorous songs,''Hang on the Bell, Nellie," "Rum by Gum," and "Lizzie Borden."
Miss Makeba, a South African folksinger, sang most of her songs in her native language. Her repertoire included the "Click Song," involving a noise Africans producein their throats, the "Theme from 'Black Orpheus'", and "Kilimanjaro."
Miss Makeiba and the trio then sang two selections together, including the humorous "Naughty Little Flea." The group first appeared together at the Blue Angel in Manhattan. They now work with Harry Belafonte, with whom Miss Makeba made a tour this summer.
