✨About the program✨

Mackenzie Melemed's debut album Tulevaisuus pairs new works he commissioned from Laura Kaminsky, Stephen Hough, and Avner Dorman, each inspired by the music of Bach, Liszt, and Brahms.

🎹Hough’s Prelude and Fugue (Aeolian) reimagines JS Bach’s Prelude and Fugue B-flat minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, weaving the letters of Melemed’s last name into the fugue subject as a musical cryptogram

🎹 Kaminsky’s Threnody…October 2024 offers a raw, urgent reflection on Liszt’s Funérailles. Liszt's work is a tribute to three of his friends who suffered in the failed Hungarian Revolution against Habsburg monarchy in 1849.

🎹 Dorman’s Lament and Variations, dedicated to the victims of the October 2023 attack in Israel, reflects on Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 9. Brahms work was written in 1854 after his friend and mentor, Robert Schumann was hospitalized. Brahms moved to Düsseldorf to help Clara Schumann with the family affairs and look after her children as she prepared for childbirth and the resumption of her career as one of Europe’s leading pianists.

This Saturday, May 2nd at 2:00 PM, we're thrilled to welcome pianist Mackenzie Melemed back to the Stone Church for a performance celebrating his new CD, Tulevaisuus.

Finnish for “future”, Tulevaisuus pairs new works by Laura Kaminsky, Stephen Hough, and Avner Dorman with music by Bach, Liszt, and Brahms that has shaped his artistry.

Originally from Paxton, Mackenzie began piano studies at age four, and studied locally with Olga Rogach. A protegé of Emmanuel Ax, Mackenzie won the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2022, one of the highest honors to be bestowed on young American classical musicians.

He has performed as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Edmonton Symphony, the Polish Radio Orchestra, and other prominent ensembles, and has appeared in recitals at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital, as well as at major venues and festivals across North America, Europe and Asia.

Coming up this Saturday night...it's silent film night at the Stone Church featuring organist Peter Krazinski and our historic Johnson & Son pipe organ!

Broadly recognized for his imaginative and energetic performances, and winner of First Prize in Improvisation from the American Guild of Organists National Competition, Peter is known worldwide for his unique accompaniment to classic silent films.

Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" takes viewers to the Klondike, Alaska, where a comedy unfolds amid harsh conditions. The film also stars Georgia Hale, Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Henry Bergman, and Malcolm Waite. It is the fifth-highest-grossing silent film in cinema history, and Variety called The Gold Rush "the greatest and most elaborate comedy ever filmed." The New York Times called it 'the outstanding gem of all of Chaplin's pictures, as it has more thought and originality than even such masterpieces of mirth as The Kid and Shoulder Arms."

It's an evening the whole family will enjoy!
