Scouts from Gilbertsville Troop 36, Sassamansville Troop 291 and Pack 291 met at the Deep Creek Campground in Green Lane State Park for a weekend of camping and pioneering. Present for the weekend were the Troop 36 Marines patrol, Troop 291 Soaring Eagles, Flying Monkeys, and pack AOL patrols. On Saturday evening Pack 291 joined and camped overnight. The weather was beautiful with no rain and reaching temperatures of low 80s*F in the daytime and high 40s*F at night.
On Friday night scouts constructed a flagpole using bamboo spars and rope. This flagpole was used for colors the rest of the weekend. The Marines patrol used new gear to construct a neat campsite using the patrol method. Leaders used their newly refurbished patrol box and had their first campout in a long while with gear, menu, and duty roster separate from youth.
During Saturday program scouts constructed a platform tower using lashings and skills highlighted in First Class rank requirements. The Marines patrol visited newly installed Owl boxes as a part of K. Tyson’s recent Eagle Scout project, followed by some fly fishing on the reservoir. While hiking, the scouts caught glimpses of a wedding ceremony in the park. During dinner there was a potluck picnic where the Marines patrol prepared a garden salad and Troop 36 leaders cooked a full dutch oven of mashed potatoes.
Following the campout scouts are eager to obtain more bamboo to make additional camp gadgets and practice their pioneering. Scouts were happy to work with another troop enjoying large games of football, jackpot, and manhunt.
