The women here are not waiting to be rescued. They are working, building, and raising families — often with very little.

Hope Arising showed up to walk alongside them. Not in front.

On July 4th, we’re thinking about what independence actually means.

Not a date on a calendar. Not a celebration. But a woman doubling her income. A grandmother finding her business again after years of illness. Forty women getting access to capital for the first time.

This is what freedom looks like where we work.
And you’re part of it.

Nobody asked them to come. It was a Saturday morning.

Word got out that we were visiting a secondary school in Narok, and by the time we arrived, the kids were already there — in their school uniforms — ready to play.

We brought jerseys from a boys soccer team in Arizona and brand new soccer balls for the school. They brought everything else.

For the next hour, nobody needed a translator.

That’s what community looks like when it doesn’t need an introduction.

This is what community looks like when it comes from the inside out. Not a slogan someone handed them. Not a mission statement written in a boardroom. Words that belong to the people who live them.

We came to Narok thinking we had something to offer. We left knowing we had something to learn.

Dignity isn’t something we give.

It’s something we protect.

We define it this way: the inherent, inalienable worth and value that every person possesses simply by being human.

But definitions only go so far.

At a recent skills training in Ethiopia, one of our sponsorship students stood up in front of her peers and said something we haven’t stopped thinking about. In Amharic. Without hesitation.

“I am a good student. I won’t miss church. I will not be late for school. I forgive. I will not back down from what I believe in. I will not lose hope.”

She already knew her worth.

That’s what Hope Arising exists to build.

It was a Tuesday.

Market day in Ethiopia. The day these women sell their goods, earn their income, feed their families.

And they chose to be here instead — at the launch of our wellness training. They paid for transport out of their own pockets. They walked away from a full day of wages.

So our local staff did something simple: they paid every woman for her time.

Not because we had to. Because their time has value. Because showing up costs something. And because an organization that asks women to sacrifice without acknowledgment isn’t building partnership — it’s just extracting it.

This is what it looks like to take dignity seriously.

Somewhere between the work, there was this.

The Maasai Mara. Elephants. Giraffes. Zebras. Lions. A cheetah. A hyena. A marabou stork doing absolutely nothing gracefully. And then the sun went down over the Mara and creation had nothing left to prove.

Kenya will do that to you.

During rainy season in Narok, the roads turn to mud. Deep, vehicle-swallowing mud. Our cars got stuck. Every single time.

So we asked Noel — why don’t they fix the roads?

She smiled and told us what the community had told her.

“The Maasai said they don’t want good roads. The cows do not get stuck.”

They weren’t waiting for outside solutions to a problem they don’t have. Their livestock moves freely. Their community functions. The road that looks broken to us works perfectly for them.

This is what we mean by community-led development. Before we build anything, we ask. Before we assume anything is broken, we listen. Because sometimes what looks like a problem from the outside is actually a system that’s already working.

That’s Disruptive Giving.

Meet Noel. For five years she has been building a school in Narok, Kenya — in a Maasai community where girls have had no secondary school options. Until now.

Naitore School opens in January 2027. It will be completely self-sustaining. A water filtration system sells purified water to fund teacher salaries, uniforms, meals, and supplies. A garden feeds the students and generates income. Greenhouses are coming. And not one girl will pay a school fee.

This trip, we painted the science lab, planted trees, watched the water filtration system get installed, and stood in a room that is almost ready for its first students.
We didn’t build this. Noel did. We just showed up — and so did a donor family who flew here, funded the filtration system, and handed their kids a shovel.

That’s what this looks like when it’s working.

In our business training, we talk about the 6 P’s (or principles) of business. One of them is Community.

The idea is simple: once you learn something of value, you don’t keep it. You turn around and give it away, sharing the knowledge with the community.

When one woman learns it, the whole community feels it.
