He was doing good.
Ninety days sober.
Job lined up.
Keys in his pocket.
Bible on the nightstand.
Then the phone buzzed.
It wasn’t a drug.
It wasn’t a bottle.
It was a person.
Someone from the old life.
“Just checking on you.”
“Miss you.”
“You’ve changed.”
And that was the trap.
Scripture says,
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33)
He told himself he was strong enough now.
Told himself he could “witness.”
Told himself he could sit where he used to sit and not become who he used to be.
But the Bible warns us,
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” (Proverbs 22:3)
One conversation turned into a meeting.
One meeting turned into a memory.
And memory turned into a craving.
It didn’t start with using.
It started with not guarding his heart.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
The relapse didn’t happen the night he fell—
It happened the moment he chose connection over obedience.
God had already told him,
“Come out from among them and be separate.” (2 Corinthians 6:17)
Sober living gave him a bed.
Recovery gave him tools.
But obedience would have given him freedom.
Because sometimes the enemy doesn’t come as temptation—
He comes as familiar.
And not every relationship is from God,
Even if it feels like love.
“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” (Proverbs 13:20)
