It’s the final day of Main Street Week! 📣 Today we are looking to the future and how Main Street is Full of Possibilities.

We invite you to imagine the future of our own historic waterfront and of districts across our state. We believe that Main Street is full of possibilities—for a thriving entrepreneurial and small business ecosystem; for gathering places that bring our community together around a shared love for our harbor; and for the intentional preservation of our rich maritime heritage. It’s an ongoing opportunity to work shoulder-to-shoulder to appreciate, protect, and celebrate the unique place we call home

We see these limitless possibilities unfolding right here in Gig Harbor:
When we look at our historic district, we see a thriving ecosystem where small businesses can dream big. We are constantly working to expand those possibilities—whether that means supporting uniquely local retail stores like Fox Island Trading Co., or collaborating behind the scenes on long-term initiatives that support our local arts, culture, and economic vitality. By working shoulder-to-shoulder with our community partners, we ensure that our waterfront isn’t just preserving its rich history, but actively innovating for a vibrant future.

The Main Street movement in Washington State is strong, and it offers limitless potential for our communities to continue to innovate, adapt, and thrive.

Thank you for celebrating Main Street Week with us! How do you want to help shape the future of our waterfront? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

It’s Main Street Week! 📣 Today, we are sharing a part of a daily series with WA Main Street to recognize why Main Street is a sound investment.

Main Street represents both longevity and adaptability. From the potential to reuse and reimagine historic spaces to the impressive track record of reinvention through decades of economic and social change, Main Streets—the organizations and the districts themselves—are a sound investment.

The Washington State Main Street Program has a positive return on investment for the State of Washington. For every dollar the state has allocated to the program, the economic activity generated in Main Street communities has generated $1.58 back to the state in tax revenues from enhanced business activity.

This noteworthy ROI encompasses the Main Street Tax Credit Incentive Program (MSTCIP), a unique funding opportunity that allows Washington businesses to effectively keep their tax dollars local by making a donation to a designated Main Street Community.

We see this return on investment in action right here in Gig Harbor:
When local businesses participate in the Tax Credit program, those dollars stay right here on the waterfront to fund vital economic lifelines—like our Small Business Grant Program. To date, this program has poured thousands of dollars directly back into our waterfront district to help small businesses improve their spaces, enhance exterior lighting, boost aesthetics, and thrive. By utilizing programs like the MSTCIP, our local business community is quite literally investing in itself, ensuring our historic waterfront remains resilient and vibrant for everyone.

It’s Main Street Week! 📣 Today, we are sharing a part of a daily series with WA Main Street to recognize how Main Street bridges urban and rural.

From Gig Harbor, up-and-coming metro areas such as Vancouver and Everett to rural regions like Colville and LaCrosse, Main Street has been an effective strategy for organizing local people around their shared passion for resilient historic commercial districts since 1984.

In fact, one of the best things about Washington Main Street is the diversity of the network of Main Street communities across our state. While the contexts may differ, the principles are the same, and Main Street leaders from every corner of our state have the opportunities to learn with and from each other through Washington Main Street's programming.

The power of this network is on display right here in Gig Harbor:
Learning from peer Main Street communities across the state is exactly what inspires us to find fresh, creative ways to celebrate our own historic waterfront! It's that collaborative network that sparks ideas for immersive, storytelling-driven programming—like our popular "Pints, Myths & Maritime Spirits" walking tour. By sharing tools, successes, and strategies with our fellow districts, we can better preserve, appreciate and celebrate our unique maritime heritage while actively building a vibrant, thriving ecosystem.

Whether a Main Street district is contending with the pressures associated with being along the I-5 corridor, across a toll bridge, or struggling with the population threats that come with changes to agricultural practices, Main Street can be a powerful tool for bringing people together to sustain and invigorate downtown.

We hope you'll join us at the center of it all—in Ellensburg!—for the PLACES Conference on October 6-8, 2026.

It’s Main Street Week! 📣 Today, we are sharing a part of a daily series with WA Main Street to recognize how Main Street bolsters small businesses.

While Main Street America's recent small business survey gives reasons for metered hope, Washington's small businesses are lagging behind national averages when it comes to confidence in future success. According to this data, Washington's businesses continue to experience lower revenue and higher expenses for doing business, demonstrating that support is more critical than ever.

The good news is that small businesses located in Main Street districts reported higher confidence scores than those not supported by a local Main Street organization.

We see this proof in action right here in Gig Harbor:
To combat rising costs and economic uncertainty, the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance works tirelessly to channel customers directly to our local merchants. In 2025 alone, over 67,000 people attended our district events! Whether it’s rallying the community around an event like Chalk the Harbor & Waterfront ArtWalk or introducing fresh economic drivers like the Swig the Gig libations walking tour, we are constantly innovating to ensure small businesses—like B's Bagels —have a bustling, supportive environment where they can thrive.

Main Street is consistently a trusted resource, if not an actual lifeline, to small businesses. A 2021 study showed that businesses located in Washington Main Street districts rebounded from the pandemic at a faster rate than businesses located in similar environments but without the presence of a Main Street organization.

During economic uncertainty, small businesses depend upon Main Street as a rooted and trusted connection to resources and strategy.

Our environment—the places where we live, work, and play—has a significant impact on our wellbeing, both at the individual and the societal levels. When we don't feel connected to our place and our neighbors, we experience negative impacts on our physical health, our quality of life, and our shared resiliency. Historic downtowns and neighborhood business districts are rife with possibilities for fostering community connections and the many positive impacts that ripple out from social connection.

There is a strong connection between Main Street and sense of belonging. Our districts, as places, create opportunities for increased connection and belonging, especially when they are intentionally programmed, like our or Holidays in the Harbor.

But perhaps one of the greatest ways that Main Street fosters belonging is through volunteerism. Washington Main Street's Belonging in the Evergreen State report confirms that Main Street volunteers experience a high sense of belonging. Volunteerism is core to the work we do on Main Street—it helps us accomplish our goals, but it also provides opportunities for community members to work together, shoulder to shoulder, in service to our community.

The Maritime Gig Festival weekend is allllllmost here, and we are incredibly proud to support our local fishing fleet for a cherished Gig Harbor tradition: the Blessing of the Fleet! ⚓✨

Hard-working captains are preparing for the season ahead, and they need our help to keep our waters safe and meaningful for everyone. If you plan to be out on the water this Sunday, June 7th, please swipe through to see how we can protect the fleet together.

The fleet will be anchoring and preparing ahead of the ceremony, so recreational boaters are asked to maintain a wide safety buffer zone during peak hours:
🛑 When: Sunday, June 7th | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Ceremony begins at 1:00 PM)
📍 Where: The commercial fishing fleet line-up in the harbor

Quick things to remember as you navigate the harbor:
🔹 Tied together does not mean stationary: Wind and tides cause these large vessels to rotate. Give them a wide berth!
🔹 Protect the procession: Keep all smaller watercraft completely out of the buffer zone until the wreath is dropped so the blessing boat can steer safely.
🔹 Practice safe boating: Move slowly, minimize your wake, stay alert, and be courteous.

Thank you for showing the ultimate Gig Harbor respect to our working fleet, our traditions, and each other. Let’s make it a safe and wonderful Maritime Gig for all! Thank you wholeheartedly to for all the planning, hard work and effort to keep this wonderful tradition alive for us all to enjoy and participate in!
