We purchased our 100 year old homestead from the Hanson Family in 2004. The third generation family were environmental stewards, cultivating the land with fruits, vegetables, raising cattle and

chickens in the early 1900s. Since acquiring the farm, we have continued with the same safe growing practices, rehabilitating the orchards, continually listening to the land, building the soils while keeping everything we do in sync with nature. The farm is home to over 50 fruit trees, a large grape orchard, two extensive vegetable gardens, native plants, and berry patches. We never use herbicides, pesticides or w**d and feeds of any kind. All seeds are GMO free, using only organic growing methods. Kathleen Rose is a certified Master Gardener and holds a BS from The University of Washington. She has 16 professional years working in laboratory diagnostics sales focused on microbiology & immunochemistry testing for public health, and most recently academia, food & medical research. She uses her science background to help others grow and learn about healthy ecosystems, plants & nature! We partner with the extension office, the conservation district, the fruit society and others to continually learn and improve our growing practices. Making our own compost from our animal waste, vermicomposting, adding green manures and cover crops to protect and build the soils during the off season. All veggie & fruit waste is either composted or fed to our animals and returned to mother earth. RoseOrchards also raises & supports a diverse population of pollinators. As the farm is located near our fragile Puget Sound, we take great care in managing water runoff and protecting the native forest, plants & wildlife that surround the property. WillaBella Farm is our children’s learning program used to teach youth farm science, while also hosting a weekly youth farm & art stand in the summer. A majority of small family farms in the United States operate with high-risk profit margins. Four years ago, Roni Ryan started goat yoga at her farmstead in Poulsbo, Wash., and it’s been a major source of income since then. But with an increasing number of challenges, even adorable baby animals ma...

Petition to Establish the Agriculture Advisory Council Immediately!

Dear Ag Partners,

After months of public input, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners is preparing to begin deliberations on updates to the agriculture code as part of the Growth Management Act review.

One of the most important components of these updates is the long-awaited creation of an Agriculture Advisory Council (AAC). This council would include members from across our agriculture and equine communities and would provide essential, informed guidance to County leadership on issues that directly impact local agriculture.

As obvious as the need is, it’s still not guaranteed that the Board of County Commissioners will follow through on its 21-year promise to create the AAC. We want to make it absolutely clear that there is a very large and loud community voice in favor of this.

We are asking you to add your name to this petition in support of the creation of the Agriculture Advisory Council. Your voice matters! And together we can ensure agriculture has the representation it deserves in Kitsap County.

Thank you,
-The Kitsap Community & Agricultural Alliance (KCAA)

🌱 Vermicomposting: A Simple Way to Build Healthier Soil 🐛

Vermicomposting is a research-supported method for turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into worm castings—a nutrient-rich amendment that improves soil structure, moisture retention, and plant health. It’s a cooler, slower process than traditional composting, making it ideal for home gardeners looking to reduce waste and build living, biologically active soil. 🌿🌼

🌿 How It Works

🐛 Red wigglers at work: Composting worms such as Eisenia fetida break down organic matter in a controlled bin environment.
❄️ Cool, consistent temperatures: Vermicomposting typically operates between 50–86°F
🌱 Living soil biology: Worm castings introduce beneficial microbes that support soil fertility and plant vigor.

🪱 How to Get Started

🛠️ Set up a bin: Use a commercial vermicompost bin or a ventilated DIY tote with drainage.
🧻 Prepare bedding: Add moistened, shredded paper or similar materials to create a healthy worm habitat.
🍎 Add food scraps: Provide small portions of fruit and vegetable scraps to help worms process material efficiently.
• 🧺 Harvest responsibly: Collect finished castings from the bottom or gently separate worms into fresh bedding.

🌼 Benefits for Your Garden

🌿 Nutrient-dense fertilizer: Castings provide essential nutrients in forms readily available to plants.
🔄 Slow, steady nutrient release: Minimizes risk of over-fertilization and supports sustained plant growth.
💧 Improved moisture retention: Enhances soil structure—especially valuable during dry summer months.
🌎 Reduces landfill waste: Keeps valuable organic material in the garden ecosystem where it benefits soil health.
