The Russell Family Foundation

The Russell Family Foundation Since it was established in 1999, The Russell Family Foundation has approximately $130M in grants, supporting more than 675 community groups and individuals.

The Russell Family Foundation serves as a community partner for grassroots leaders living and working in Pierce County; nonprofits and individuals focused on environmental stewardship in the Puget Sound region; and groups promoting peace and security around the world. Created with the belief that trust and relationships matter, The Russell Family Foundation supports its grantees and partners with

lifelong learning to help advance stronger collaborations; overcome social and environmental challenges; and promote meaningful and lasting change that benefits everyone. It expands opportunity for the people of our region; encourages community stewardship of our local environment through place-based programming; and strengthens communities with mission-based investing.

What does environmental education really look like?

Boots in the mud. Great Peninsula Conservancy connects students to protected lands through hands-on science.

Hands in the water. Nisqually Reach Nature Center brings students into estuary ecosystems.

Questions turning into understanding. Environmental Science Center builds environmental literacy and leadership through hands-on science.

Students becoming stewards. Vashon Nature Center develops youth through community science and research.

Across our region, these experiences are happening every day.

Come for the leadership. Stay for the community.

What stays with people isn’t just what they learn, it’s who they learn alongside. The relationships. The trust. The sense that the work doesn’t end when the session does. Through the Jane’s Fellowship Graduate Network, leaders across Pierce County stay connected; continuing to support one another and build on what started in the fellowship.

We’ll be sharing more about the next cohort soon, and if you have questions, we’d love to hear from you.

Learning doesn’t always happen at a desk. Across Washington, organizations are creating opportunities for students to learn by being in the environment itself, turning lessons into lived experience.

Most students are introduced to ecosystems in textbooks, but real understanding takes hold when they’re outside, standing in one, and seeing how everything connects around them.

YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties brings students outdoors for hands-on environmental learning that builds confidence and connection.

The Washington Outdoor School Consortium is expanding access to multi-day outdoor learning experiences for students across the state.

At The Russell Family Foundation, we believe environmental education is more than learning about nature. It’s about building connection, responsibility, and possibility. Across the region, our partners are creating opportunities for young people to step outside, explore, and see themselves as part of something bigger.

The most meaningful moments of Jane’s Fellowship Program don’t happen on the agenda.

They happen mid-meal, between sessions, and in the midst of authentic connection. Leaders doing real work in their communities--often without titles or recognition--come together to learn from one another, share honestly, and build lasting connection. These are the conversations that stay with you. The ones that shape how you lead long after the program ends.

Caring for one another is at the heart of a healthy community. Right now, our region is facing an urgent blood and platelet shortage, with critically low supplies of Type O blood and lifesaving platelets needed for emergency care, cancer treatment, and ongoing patient support across the Pacific Northwest.

Bloodworks Northwest is calling on our community to help meet this critical need by filling more than 17,000 open donation appointments in the weeks ahead.

If you are able, we encourage you to consider donating blood or platelets to help support neighbors, families, and patients across our region. Learn more or schedule an appointment at bloodworksnw.org/giveblood.

We’re excited to see the launch of Kiss The Ground's new Regenerative Farm Map, a national tool designed to help people find and support regenerative farmers in their own communities.

Research shows that 75% of people want to buy food that improves their health, yet many don’t know where to find it. This map helps close that gap.

Efforts like this align with our Food for Climate Solutions work to strengthen regional food systems and expand access to sustainable food. Explore the map and learn how to support regenerative farmers in your community: https://kisstheground.com/announcing-kiss-the-grounds-regenerative-farm-map/
