If we stop vaccination, diseases that have become uncommon will return. Vaccines are a great tool that can eliminate disease from the map.

From Patty (Peru):

Yesterday was another great day. I found out the official numbers. We have been consistently serving 350 patients per day. We’ve done 5 clinics so far. Today will be our last.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of shadowing our Ob/Gyn all day and found it fascinating. I had a baby and went through menopause, but discovered how little I know about the female reproductive system. As usual, the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

The most interesting case of the day was a 3-year-old. Her heart and all her organs were on the opposite side of her body. This is so rare that our cardiologist, who has been in practice for 30 years in the states, has never seen it before. Of course, he learned about it in medical school, but never actually saw it until yesterday. Daniel was so fortunate because the doctor he was shadowing discovered it and let Daniel find and listen to her heart beat on the right side of her body. The little girl is perfectly healthy. Apparently, as long as all the organs are switched, there’s no problem. There is only a problem when just the heart is on the right side, but the other internal organs are where they should be.

Afterwards, we went to the Piura market and did some power shopping. We only had a half hour to shop before the market closed.

World Medical Mission celebrates National Nurses Week and salutes all of our caring and compassionate nurses who have served around the globe. Not only seeing to the physical needs of their patients, but to their emotional and spiritual needs, as well. A few facts about nursing are: 1) The nursing profession is believed to have begun in Rome at around 300 A.D. 2) As the Roman Empire was replaced by the Byzantines, the Capitol City of Constantinople created two fully developed hospitals that housed both male and female nurses. 3) In the Middle Ages nursing made great advancements, and the majority of nurses consisted of nuns and monks. 4) In 1860 Florence Nightingale opened the first professional nursing school in the world at St. Thomas Hospital in London. 5) In 1923 missionary nurses constituted 32% of the nurses in China! Thank you to all of the Nurses out there, especially those who have served with World Medical Mission in order to advance the Name of Jesus Christ!
