Great piece written in Gig Harbor Now on the current state of the project encompassing Doc Weathers Creek:

The Eagles Ridge property is 114 acres of forested property with waterfront access. Only a fraction of it is developable.

Doc Weathers Creek Riparian Forest is still at risk of being developed and the community needs to come together to find a solution to conserve this land. These 115acres, along with the Narrows Park, Airport property, and Madrona Links golf course make up the single largest green belt left in the Gig Harbor Community Plan attached to the Sound with a historical Salmon bearing stream. Hoping the Gig Harbor Land Conservation Fund along with Great Peninsula Conservancy can help rally community conservation advocates to help create a pathway to save this forest while creating close in recreational opportunities for community members. The PenMet Parks deal in 2020 had envisioned mountain biking trails, hiking trails, frisbee golf, and much more. Help spread the word about this critical piece of community land and the important part it plays in the Puget Sound ecosystem!

Penmet parks grant is approved. Hoping landowners will make the right decision to keep this estuary forest preserved for years to come. This could be an amazing entrance to an expanded Narrows Park! Gateway to low impact mountain biking trails, frisbee golf and most importantly protecting this green space!

Doc Weathers Creek was directed into a culvert when the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was rebuilt. Perhaps new funding from the infrastructure bill could support daylighting this creek and restoring salmon habitat for the south Puget Sound?

The national Infrastructure and Jobs Act recently passed by the U.S. Senate includes $1 billion for the first-ever national grant program established to specifically address culvert impacts to anadromous fish.

US, Canada, and Tribal Nations working together to assess the state of the water that connects us all. Restoration of Doc Weathers Creek and Gig Harbor’s last Riparian Forest is our local responsibility as part of this larger effort to protect the Salish Sea. Give it a read and think about what else we can do to support this effort.

Approved logging is underway by Soundbuilt Homes to thin out certain areas of the 116 acre forest while PenMet and Great Peninsula Conservancy navigate grant processes.

Meanwhile Evergreen MTB Alliance and disc golf enthusiasts are dreaming up “what could be” if this area is kept as green space.

"Riparian vegetation along marine shorelines serves a variety of critical ecological and social functions. Coastal trees and other vegetation on backshore areas, banks, and bluffs help stabilize the soil, control pollution entering marine waters, provide fish and wildlife habitat, and modify stressful physical conditions along shorelines. Riparian areas are transitional, providing connections between and affecting both adjacent aquatic and terrestrial systems."
