History of The York Post;
Named after Lee County cousins Randell and Asa York. York was born in Giddings in 1889. He enlisted in the Army and was sent to Company "G", 9th Infantry. He was wounded July 18th of 1918 and returned to duty on August 16th. It's probable that his promotion to corporal came as a result of the actions that brought about his first wound. According to his tombstone, he "received his mortal wound" on October 8th, 1918, and died later that day. It was just 34 days short of the end of the war." York was born in nearby Dime Box. He must have been aware of his cousin's service in the Army when he enlisted in the Marines (51st Company, 5th Marines) on May 22, 1918. He arrived in France on August 27th - just a week after cousin Randall had returned to duty from his first wound. According to his tombstone: He "was among 40 who volunteered to fill the depleted ranks" immediately after arriving. "His company went over the top October 2, 3, and 4th. It was on the 4th he received the wound that killed him on October 21st - 21 days before the war's end. He was 17 years old."- Texas Escapes Online Magazine

The City of Giddings and the Giddings Police Department will never send letters or make phone calls requesting money to be donated. Today we honor **Samantha "Sam" Juan** (also known as Maria Samantha Juan or Sam Moeller), a trailblazing U.S. Army veteran and one of the first women selected for the elite **Cultural Support Team (CST)** program during the Afghanistan War.

An immigrant from Bahrain (born to Filipino parents), Juan enlisted in the U.S. Army straight out of high school—even before becoming a citizen—starting as a cook. After earning citizenship, she retrained as a signals intelligence analyst. In 2010, when the Army quietly posted urgent calls for female volunteers for a high-risk, classified role, she answered.

This led to the grueling CST selection at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty)—a program created by USSOCOM to enable female soldiers to engage Afghan women and children in culturally sensitive ways that male operators could not, gathering critical intelligence during raids, village stability operations, and direct-action missions.

In 2012, Juan deployed to eastern Afghanistan attached to **DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6)'s Red Squadron**. She participated in over 50 night raids and direct-action missions: entering homes amid chaos, searching and building rapid trust with women and children (sometimes with kids clinging to her), collecting intelligence that male teams couldn't access, and supporting high-stakes operations in one of the war's most dangerous regions.

When the CST program ended around 2015–2017, the invisible wounds of combat followed her home. Juan has openly shared her journey through trauma, addiction recovery, and rebuilding—via education (a BFA from Old Dominion University, MLA from Johns Hopkins), art, ritual, psychedelic therapy, and advocacy. A 2014 Pat Tillman Scholar, she now creates, speaks, and helps others navigate healing as a veteran, artist, and advocate.

From enlisting as a non-citizen to embedding with the world's most elite operators, then confronting the hardest battles after the war—Sam Juan's story exemplifies quiet courage, resilience, and the ongoing fight for wholeness.

Thank you for your service and your continued truth-telling, Sam.

Rest easy knowing your impact endures.

God bless this American hero.
