It Isn't Just Memory

When people think about Alzheimer's, they often think first about forgetting.

But some warning signs can look very different.

Someone may begin having difficulty:

• Planning or solving problems
• Completing familiar tasks
• Keeping track of time or place
• Understanding visual images or spatial relationships
• Finding the right words when speaking or writing

Changes like these don't automatically mean someone has Alzheimer's. But when they are new, persistent or interfere with everyday life, they are worth paying attention to.

Knowing what to watch for can help families recognize when it's time to start a conversation.

From Kitchen to Doorstep: The People Behind Lunch

Before lunch reaches someone's front door, a whole lot has already happened that people never see.

Menus have been planned, food has been prepared, and meals have been packed.

Routes have been organized, vehicles have been loaded, and miles have been driven.

And most importantly, people have shown up to make all of it happen. So the meal may be what a client or neighbor sees, but the it is the people behind it are what make Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area possible.

To every employee, volunteer, and community partner who helps us get meals where they need to go, THANK YOU.

We all forget things sometimes. A name. An appointment. Why we walked into a room.

But memory loss that begins to disrupt everyday life is different.

The Alzheimer’s Association lists memory loss that affects daily life as one of the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s. That might include forgetting recently learned information, repeatedly asking the same questions or increasingly relying on others for things a person once handled independently.

Knowing the signs isn't about assuming the worst. It's about knowing when it may be time to have a conversation and talk with a doctor.

👨‍👩‍👧 A simple conversation can prevent a costly scam.

Ask the older adults in your life:
• Have you received any unusual phone calls?
• Has anyone asked for your Medicare number?
• Has someone claimed to be from FEMA or another government agency?

Talking today could prevent fraud tomorrow.

He doesn't care what job you had. She doesn't care how much money you made.

They really don't care whether you can still drive, whether walking has become difficult or if you don't get out of the house as much as you once did.

Your dog still thinks you're the greatest person who has ever lived, and your cat still thinks the house belongs to her, while graciously allowing you to remain of course. 😂

For some of our home-delivered meal clients, a pet isn't just a pet. It's the one who gets up with them in the morning, and is the one waiting beside their chair. They are the one they talk to during the day, and makes an otherwise quiet house feel like a home.

That's why AniMeals on Wheels matters.

We help provide pet food for eligible MOWRCA home-delivered meal clients so they don't have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding the companion they love. Because no one should have to make that choice, and because Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area programs take care of our neighbors. Even if sometimes our neighbors have paws. 🐾❤️

The Knock 🚪

Sometimes the most important part of a Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area delivery isn't something you can put on a plate.

It's the knock on the door. A senior neighbor hearing their name called by a smiling face. It's recognizing the person at the door, and knowing someone thought of you today.

Yes, we deliver meals, but it's so much more than just a meal

Did you know?

There is no income requirement to receive home-delivered meals through Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area?

Our home-delivered meal program serves older adults who have difficulty accessing meals because of circumstances such as physical limitations, an inability to drive, or a lack of transportation. Needing a little help does not have an income bracket.
