CatsFirst Spay Clinic

CatsFirst Spay Clinic CatsFirst is primarily a spay clinic for feral and unowned cats. We work with approved trappers but do not take appointments from the public.

We complete 2500 surgeries each year, mostly at no fee to caretaker thanks to generous donors. Our mission is to provide medical services to unowned cats and to assist caretakers and trappers with food and other supplies. We provide services to over 2600 cats/year, usually at no cost to caretakers or trappers. We have provided these services since 2016, and each year we increase the numbers of c

ats helped. Our founder and President is Dr. Linda East, who is also the Chief Veterinarian for the CatsFirst Spay Clinic. Most of her time is donated. We assign all surgery days to approved trappers. The majority of the ferals we spay/neuter come to us in this manner. We do not take appointments from the public or spay/neuter pet cats because, unfortunately, we are a small clinic and do not have staffing or funding to expand. Our goal is to offer services to the underserved feral community and to continue to do so. Our budget for accomplishing our goal of providing free medical service to ferals is $140,000/year. We have the same expenses as any other spay clinic (staff, rent, medication, supplies, utilities, food) but without a paying clientele. Yet if we set surgery fees for ferals, the most needy would not be done at all. We also provide veterinary care and hospitalization for ferals that are ill or injured if they will allow treatment. We have removed eyes, paid for orthopedic surgeries at other clinics, treated wounds, given antibiotics, and attended to the various maladies feral cats are prone too. This gives us tremendous satisfaction, knowing the fate of these cats without veterinary help. We are grateful for community cat helpers who donate, making our services possible.

A longtime cat feeder in central Greensboro had her car stolen yesterday in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Her phone, wallet, and other belongings were in the car.

The car has been recovered and an arrest has been made by the awesome GPD. The thief is an extremely dangerous POS and this feeder was lucky to be unharmed.

But feeders, please take heed. I don't have to relate the dangers feeders put themselves into or list actions to take. Feeders rarely do their work in the best parts of town. But do not risk your life. Above all, if you feed, do it quickly. Dump dry and drive away. A distracted lone woman showing up anywhere at the same time every day is a recipe for disaster.

Be careful out there. I don't scare easily, but this has me spooked.

This is Jenny Dots, the polydactyl that was adopted seven years ago as a kitten and recently returned to CatsFirst. She was morbidly obese when returned, but she has lost 4 pounds since August and appears to be in perfect health.

Happy to report that Jenny has been adopted into a perfect home. She will be the only cat and already sleeps with new owner. And she will live next door to me.

I am grateful for the donations we have received to spruce up the clinic and to ensure we pass yearly inspections. The new floors and storage shed will cost $7000, but ferals deserve the best we can give them.

Here is one of our housecats (formerly a feral) that prefers high places to sleep.
