I purchased our place sixteen years ago yesterday. It has been a place of deep joy. Hospitality has been extended to family and friends, active birds and generous bees, abundant gardens and ambitious trees.

The quarter section surrounding our homestead in east central Illinois will be sold at auction on Tuesday.

We have been very fortunate to have a great neighbor. Owned by his sister, the land has been farmed and managed by Don. Our home and the adjacent property belonged to his family. We have appreciated his care and our conversation "over the fence."

With anticipation, we look forward to discovering our new neighbors.

Wendell Berry once defined “community” this way:

“A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves.”
