Lincoln Cemetery • “100 Nights of Taps”

Lincoln Cemetery is honored to participate in “100 Nights of Taps.” We warmly welcome the community to gather with us at 6:00 PM for this meaningful moment of remembrance. This timing allows everyone ample opportunity to travel to the National Cemetery afterward for their evening program.

Each week at Lincoln Cemetery, the biography of a different United States Colored Troops (USCT) soldier is read. While we do not have photographs of these brave men, their stories speak powerfully to their courage, sacrifice, and service to our country.

This Week’s Featured USCT Soldier:
Private George Bolen

We invite you to stand with us as we honor his life, his service, and the legacy of all USCT soldiers laid to rest in Gettysburg.

Today, May 24, 2026, Lincoln Cemetery at Gettysburg held its annual Memorial Day Program. Although the weather was a bit dreary, it did not keep people away. Those who attended were deeply moved and honored to take part in this long‑standing tradition.

Our Guest Speaker, Kevin M. Hymel, Historian for Arlington National Cemetery, delivered powerful and enlightening remarks. He shared the remarkable history of the “6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion” — a story hidden in plain sight for far too long. Through his unwavering research and dedication, Kevin has helped bring their legacy to the forefront, ensuring these women received the recognition they deserve.

The program was made even more meaningful by the contributions of many:

Pastor Duane Coleman – Agape International Family Worship Center

Matthew Moon – Borough Council President

Prof. Scott Hancock – Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies, Gettysburg College

Alicia Garner – Graced us with a wonderful rendition of " Battle Hymn of the Republic" Agape International Family Worship Center

Honor Guard – Allied Veterans Council of Adams County

Each played a special role in creating a memorable and heartfelt ceremony.

I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who came out to share in the Lincoln Cemetery Memorial Day Program. Your presence honors our ancestors, preserves our history, and strengthens the community that continues to carry this tradition forward.

I also extend my heartfelt thanks to the Lincoln Cemetery Board members and to the children who lovingly strewed flowers, whose dedication and participation helped make today’s program truly meaningful.

This is one of the after‑effects of the recent storm that passed through Gettysburg the other evening.

Lincoln Cemetery will still be open on Saturday. However for everyone’s safety, please keep a respectful distance from the larger stones when entering the grounds.

One of the stones is currently down, but our workers are already on top of the situation. Repairs will be made to this stone as well as to the two others that need attention.

Thank you for your understanding and care for this sacred place.

The Lincoln Cemetery Project Association warmly invites the public to attend our annual Memorial Day Program.

Since the late 1800s, Lincoln Cemetery has bestowed this honor upon the Gettysburg community. This long standing tradition—begun by our ancestors—remains a sacred responsibility.
