Postcards depicting the March 3, 1913 march for women's suffrage in Washington, DC, became a popular souvenir following the first-of-its-kind event when more than 5,000 women marched up Pennsylvania Avenue demanding the right to vote.

Taking place the day before the 1913 inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson, the march marked a turning point in the decades-long fight for women's suffrage. American women won the right to vote in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. https://s.si.edu/4l7wCpN

Historical Gettysburg women!

Tonight in Sweney’s Tavern.

Step inside one of Gettysburg’s most compelling untold stories.
During the Battle of Gettysburg, Catherine and Elizabeth Sweney sought refuge inside the Powers Mansion—unaware that the home would soon transform into a covert Union hospital hidden beneath the chaos of war. As the fighting raged outside, the Sweney women and the Powers family played a quiet but vital role in caring for the wounded and sheltering those in need.

This presentation explores their intertwined experiences, the extraordinary work of women on the home front, and the lifelong friendship that blossomed between Alice Powers and Elizabeth Sweney in the aftermath of the battle. Through letters, records, and firsthand accounts, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of courage, compassion, and resilience in Gettysburg’s darkest days.
