On this day, we mark 81 years since the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Pacific—one of the most harrowing tragedies in U.S. naval history. Fresh from delivering components of the atomic bomb to Tinian under top-secret orders, the cruiser sank in just 12 minutes, leaving hundreds of sailors adrift without a distress signal received. Over four brutal days, dehydration, exposure, and shark attacks thinned their ranks until a routine patrol plane spotted the survivors by chance—an unplanned sweep that led to one of the Navy’s largest rescues.

The loss spurred changes that saved lives thereafter: mandatory distress beacons, improved ship-tracking, and faster search-and-rescue protocols. Captain Charles McVay was court-martialed amid wartime secrecy and confusion—a decision Congress later overturned, clearing his name in 2000, thanks in part to a persistent campaign by survivors and a determined school project by 11-year-old Hunter Scott. Today, the Indianapolis stands as a somber lesson in accountability, communication, and the quiet heroism of those who endured.
