THIS DAY IN WWII HISTORY | SEPTEMBER 29, 1944

On this day in 1944, the Battle of Arracourt came to an end in the Lorraine region of France.

For more than two weeks, American forces of the 4th Armored Division had fought repeated German armored attacks near the town of Arracourt. The fighting developed into one of the largest U.S. versus German armored engagements of World War II.

American tank crews faced German Panther and Panzer IV tanks, often fighting through fog, poor visibility and rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

Despite facing heavily armored German tanks, the Americans used mobility, coordination, artillery, tank destroyers and air support to blunt the German attacks and hold their positions.

The Sherman tank played an important role in battles like Arracourt, and visitors to the WWII American Experience Museum can see an M4A3 Sherman up close in our vehicle collection.

Standing beside one today gives you an entirely different appreciation for the crews who climbed inside these machines and took them into combat across Europe.

History like this is why we preserve them.

Topics range from iron furnaces and ri**es during the Revolution to railroads in the Civil War and the industrial strength of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia during World War II.

This event is included with museum admission for all museum guests.

Comparisons Across 2 ½ Centuries: Supplying War

The Seminar Series, “Comparisons Across 2 ½ Centuries,” explores connections between America’s 250th anniversary, Gettysburg’s role as the site of the largest battle ever fought on American soil, and the broader American experience in World War II. Co-sponsored by the Dwight D. Eisenhower Chapter of the Battle of the Bulge Association and the WWII American Experience, the series examines leadership, strategy, innovation, regional contributions, and turning points across the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II.

Presented by Leon Reed, each program offers a focused comparison that highlights how events and individuals across more than two centuries of conflict shaped the nation’s history.

Staff Sergeant Earl G. Swope Jr., known to family and friends as “Beck.”

A Gettysburg High School student, young husband, and squad leader with the 99th Infantry Division, Earl was killed in Belgium on December 17, 1944, during the opening assault of the Battle of the Bulge. He was brought home and laid to rest in Gettysburg National Cemetery in 1948.

His story reminds us that Gettysburg’s history of service extends far beyond the Civil War. We remember Earl and the more than 100 Adams County service members killed during World War II.

THIS DAY IN WWII HISTORY | SEPTEMBER 22, 1944

On this day 82 years ago, American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were deep inside the Netherlands, fighting as part of Operation Market Garden.

Launched five days earlier, Market Garden was an ambitious Allied attempt to seize a series of critical bridges across the Netherlands and open a route into Germany.

By September 22, the operation had become a desperate struggle to keep the narrow Allied corridor open. American paratroopers fought to defend captured bridges, roads and towns while German forces repeatedly attempted to cut the Allied supply route.

For the men of the 101st Airborne Division, holding that corridor meant fighting far beyond the protection normally available to ground forces. Their actions helped keep the Allied advance moving even as the larger attempt to reach and hold the bridge at Arnhem ultimately failed.

Here at the WWII American Experience Museum, visitors can see a 101st Airborne helmet among the artifacts in our collection, providing a direct connection to the airborne troops who fought across Europe during World War II.

Artifacts like this help preserve the stories of the Americans who served and sacrificed.
