Slow Down Gโ€™town!

Slow Down Gโ€™town!

Residents in the Dogwood Grove and Grove Park subdivisions may have noticed new 25 mile per hour (mph) pavement markings near entry points into their respective neighborhoods. The new pavement markings are part of a pilot study brought forth by the resident-led Neighborhood Traffic Task Force.

The Neighborhood Traffic Task Force recently launched Slow Down Gโ€™town, a campaign aimed to help increase awareness of the Cityโ€™s speed limit of 25 mph on all minor streets. The speed limit pavement markings are designed to remind drivers of the regulatory speed limit while allowing the driver to keep their attention on the roadway.

While reviewing different traffic calming measures, the task force ultimately decided to conduct a pilot study with the pavement markings as a low-cost speed calming measure. Dogwood Grove and Grove Park were selected for the initial pilot study due to speeding concerns and the volume of traffic that is served by the adjacent collector streets.

While the markings are not permanent, the City is gathering data, measuring the reduction in vehicular speeds prior to and after the installation of the pavement marking pilot study. This will allow a data driven approach to evaluate the effectiveness of this pilot study. Following the conclusion of this initial study and depending on the data collected, the City may conduct an additional study in the Poplar Estates neighborhood to collect further data in order to implement a more permanent solution in an effort to reduce speeding.

The is on! On May 5, the Germantown Charity Horse Show hid 75 painted horseshoes around the City in anticipation for this summerโ€™s 74th anniversary of the horse show. GCHS aficionados and Germantown residents can hunt for the horseshoes all around the Germantown area in places ranging from local businesses to the horse show grounds. Once you find a horseshoe, bring it to the main ticket office at the GCHS Founders Pavilion to receive two free tickets and you get to keep the painted horseshoe. If you find one special horseshoe, you will be eligible to receive a grand prize from the Charity Store.

Join the Germantown Charity Horse Show Group on Facebook for daily clues on all 75 shoes. Three shoes are posted each day. Some shoes will be boosted on the GCHS Instagram stories if they are not found quickly. The last clues will be posted May 28.

Make sure you share your find on social media using the hashtag . The Germantown Charity Horse Show is looking forward to celebrating 74 years of tradition and family fun on June 6 through 10. For a full schedule of events or for more information visit, gchs.org. Happy horseshoe hunting!

*Please limit the number of shoes collected to 6 per family. Feel free to continue hunting if you find more, just leave the shoes where you found them.

These items can be taken to either location.

As a reminder, the does not regulate a trick-or-treating schedule. October 31 is the traditional date of Halloween and will be observed on this date. Commonly, residents who leave their porch lights on are considered "open for business" for trick-or-treaters.

As Halloween nears, the Germantown Police Department would like to offer a few safety tips for trick-or-treaters:
โ€ข Make sure costumes are flame-retardant.
โ€ข Costumes should be kept short to prevent tripping.
โ€ข Have children wear comfortable shoes.
โ€ข Use make-up instead of a mask, masks can be hot and can obstruct a childโ€™s view.
โ€ข Children should wear light colors or place reflective tape on costumes.
โ€ข Make costume accessories (such as knives, guns or swords) from cardboard or flexible materials.
โ€ข Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating.
โ€ข Older children should travel with friends, never alone.
โ€ข Set time limits for children to trick-or-treat.
โ€ข Map out a safe route, no shortcuts.
โ€ข Tell children not to enter a strangerโ€™s house.
โ€ข Have children trick-or-treat while itโ€™s still light outside, if it is dark have them carry a flashlight.
โ€ข Tell your children not to eat treats until they return home and have you inspect them first. Only treats in their original wrapper are recommended.

We hope everyone has a spooktacular and safe Halloween night!
