Let’s see what Sampit Child Care Center is doing as we implement The Basics Waccamaw! ❤️

This month, we’re focusing on Explore Through Movement and Play. The little learners are practicing letter recognition by tracing letters in shaving cream! 🔤🤩 What a fun and engaging way to learn their ABCs while exploring through hands-on play!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT 🚨

Today, we want to give a special shoutout to my dedicated Heroes for Literacy volunteers, Emily Cuesta-Villarreal and Linda Coleman of South Atlantic Bank in Georgetown! ❤️📚

For both ladies, this was their first time tutoring our little ones, and they truly enjoyed the opportunity to give back to their community! Seeing volunteers pour their time, love, and dedication into helping our children grow as readers is what Heroes for Literacy is all about. 🦸🏽‍♀️📖

A special THANK YOU to Mary Lee, their supervisor, for allowing Emily and Linda to volunteer their time and make a difference in the lives of our young readers. We appreciate your support and commitment to giving back to our community! ❤️🙌🏽

Terrific Tuesday ❤️🌱

We wanted to share some of the great things happening at The Sunshine Place, operated by Nicola Marion Parker!

The children have been getting their hands dirty and helping grow a garden filled with fruits and vegetables. Recently, our little gardeners harvested their sweet potatoes and turned them into delicious yams 🍠 for a sweet treat!

GUESS WHAT?! 👀🌱
This month, The Sunshine Place checked out the “On the Farm” Learn & Play Center, making it a wonderful extension of their very own garden experience. 🚜🥕🌽

We can’t wait to see what our little gardeners are up to next! Stay tuned! 💗

We appreciate all that you do for your students and families each day. Thank you for welcoming us into your classrooms and supporting our programs. You are the ones pouring into our students every day—we are simply here to support the incredible work you are already doing.

We are so grateful to partner with the City of Georgetown on their Open Enrollment Day. Black River United Way is leading Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties to sustainability by empowering the lives of its community members. How are we leading? We lead through partnering with our local communities to ensure kids have strong starts to school and they are reading successfully by the third grade. We also prepare our communities to be resilient in times of disasters!!!!!! We are Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties STRONG!!!!

Great things are on the horizon... Black River United Way is participating in Coastal Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2026!

Today was truly a treat!!!!! Forty-seven fifth graders from Sampit Elementary School were officially recognized as Georgetown County Jr. Emergency Managers by Loren Wallace, GC Emergency Manager for Georgetown County Emergency Management. Mr. Sam Hodges, Emergency Manager for Horry County Emergency Management, and Mr. Russell Goodale, Georgetown County Emergency Planner/Peer Support assisted with the training. This is a part of Black River United Way’s Be Ready! Program. Having great partners truly makes the work easy and our kids get to learn how to take care of themselves, their families and their communities in a fun and engaging way. Each student and teacher received an Emergency Go Bag and flashlight, along with their Jr. Emergency Badge. Today, we “Shined a Spotlight on Preparedness!!!!!”

Special thank you to Ms. Tara Ward, principal and Mrs. Kennington and Mrs. Hawkins and to the wonderful students who were highly engaged in the activities.

This week, we were proud to kick-off our Read and Lead program at Maryville Elementary School thanks to the generous support of HTCinc - Your Local Internet Provider. Through interactive read-alouds and mentorship, Read and Lead is building a culture of literacy in kindergarten classrooms across Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties.

Quarterly, volunteers (including employees from HTC!) will read and discuss a book focused on one of our selected leadership principles - "Be You", "Be Thankful", "Be Patient", and "Be Kind". At the end of the program, each student will receive a packet of books to build their home libraries and continue learning over the summer. Thank you, HTC, for your continued investment in early literacy in our community. We can't wait to see how our young learners read and lead this year!
