Join us for our annual cornboil and picnic at St. Francis Church's pavilion, Saturday, August 29. Feasting starts at 5 pm. Bring a dish to share. Consider bringing a chair if you'd rather not sit at the picnic tables. The Society will provide the boiled corn, fried chicken, drinks, plates, and utensils.
Bring a guest.

Among other fun activities, we will vote on the revised bylaws. Your vote is important.

Don't let Governor James Robinson continue to suffer obscurity in his own Scott County! Help us raise money for Governor Robinson's Memorial Obelisk.

The Society's Governor Robinson Memorial Obelisk Project is taking off! We now have $6,000 toward the total cost of $10,500. We need to raise an additional $4,500 before we can order the 8-foot granite obelisk. Our Vice-President, Mike Marshall, continues seeking donations from local organizations, but please consider making your own donation. Send your check to Scott County Historical Society, PO Box 158, Georgetown, Kentucky 40324 or bring it to a meeting. Make it out to Scott County Historical Society but write "Robinson Memorial" in the memo line.

The history of Lexington's Gratz Park will be explored at the Society's Thursday, August 20 meeting at Scott County Library.

Please bring canned goods for the Amen House. Last month we donated 28 pounds of food. Can we this time do 30? 35? 40?

Originally set aside in 1792 to serve as the first home of Transylvania University, Gratz Park became home to some of Lexington’s leading citizens, including Benjamin Gratz, for whom it would eventually be named. Other prominent residents have included the family of Confederate general John Hunt Morgan and Jim Gray, the city’s mayor from 2011 to 2019. Join Jeremy D. Popkin, the William T. Bryan Chair Professor of History (emeritus) from the University of Kentucky, and photographer Bob Willcutt as they tell the story of Lexington’s oldest historical district from its earliest days to the present.

This program is in partnership with the Scott County Historical Society and will serve as their monthly meeting.

PROGRESS!

Recall that at our June 18 meeting the Society approved a $3,500 cap for buying an 8-foot
granite memorial obelisk for Civil War-era Governor James Robinson. Total cost for the obelisk
is $10,500. Vice President Mike Marshall has diligently led the effort to recruit partners to share
the cost. $2,500 worth of success arrived today, August 14, courtesy of the Scott County Fiscal
Court. County Magistrate Rick Hostetler urged the Court to help us with funding. The vote was
unanimous. After adjournment, another county magistrate approached us saying how much he
appreciated the Society’s effort to install Governor James Robinson’s obelisk at Georgetown
Cemetery. A Georgetown News-Graphic reporter also approached us for more details. He will
be following our progress. Mike, some time ago, made initial contact with Georgetown City
Council, Georgetown/Scott County Tourism, and Georgetown/Scott County Museum and will
now circle back to them. Do you feel the momentum too?
