Time to pass an increase in the minimum wage so people can cover their basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, utilities, transportation and healthcare.

The federal minimum wage is paid to a shrinking number of US workers – and a growing chorus of economists and employers agree it’s out of step with today’s reality.

We often hear people blame low-wage workers for being paid poverty wages and for lacking ambition and not wanting to work. Here's a different take on the problem that says employers should value their low-wage workers as much as higher paid staff and work with them to lift themselves out of those hard labor, sometimes dangerous low-paying jobs.

Many companies blame outside factors for the trouble they’ve been having in finding and retaining frontline workers: the pandemic, the government’s stimulus checks, the intrinsic nature of low-wage work. The authors argue that in fact the real problem lies in six big mistakes companies themselve...

Higher wages benefit everyone!

"But the more disposable income people have, the more they are able to spend money at the kind of businesses that are more likely to be operated by the less wealthy, which means that those places will have to hire more people in order to keep up. It will also lead to more money for workers who rely on tips or commissions. If regular people don't have any money and cut back on going out as a result, those places will have to tighten their belts and hire fewer people. They may even raise their prices and try to appeal to those with a higher income level and more disposable income."

Increasing the minimum wage increases both earnings and employment.

"It should be a basic truism that in the US, the richest country on earth, if you work 40 hours a week you do not live in poverty. Raising the minimum wage is not only the right thing to do morally. It is also good economics. Putting money into the hands of people who will spend it on basic needs is a strong economic stimulant."

In the richest country on earth, if you work 40 hours a week you shouldn’t have to live in poverty

"Polling by JUST Capital indicates that large majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans all believe that big companies, in particular, 'have a responsibility to pay full-time adult workers in frontline jobs enough to make ends meet' and 'enough so they don’t have to rely on public assistance.' "

So, why aren't employers paying a living wage and why are our federal and state minimum wages still at $7.25 an hour?

Amazon, Starbucks, Best Buy, and Walgreens are among the companies that now pay most or all employees $15. It was a long, hard fight, and it's still not enough.
