Great job showing how funds are broken down. Schools systems are not banks. The state recommendations are 10%. Anything above and beyond can be used for raises. It is time for school boards to start looking in the mirror and realize it is time to take care of the people that are in the trenches with children day in and day out. MCEA and Susan Cintra grear job
MCEA is advocating for a pay raise for the 26-27 school year. Since our legislature let educators across the state down, yet again, the burden of our ask falls on our districts, but it is a request well within the capacity of what our district can do.
MCPS has thankfully been good stewards of our funds, so much so that our Fund 1 balance has grown from the year 2018 to now by 30 million dollars.
The Fund 1 balance is the amount that is reported to KDE each year after all bills have been paid. This is NOT building funds, NOT food service funds, this is our general fund money, most often used for salaries, excess transportation needs, and other resources.
The state requires 2% of the budget remain in the Fund 1, although 15-20% is a much more stable number. We are sitting at 52% of our budget, and 51 million dollars leftover!!! We are carrying the 3rd highest Fund 1 balance in the state, only behind Jefferson and Boone counties, two of our largest districts.
We are asking for a $5,000 flat pay increase across the board for our certified employees and a $3 an hour increase for our classified.
In order to recruit and retain the best educators for our students and community, we need to be competitive employers and while Madison County is a wonderful place to work, with inflation rates nearing 4%, our employee pay has not kept up with inflation and it is time to make a substantial investment in Madison County’s future.
Join us Thursday, May 14th at 6pm for the Board of Ed meeting as we address the board!
