I wanted to take a moment to comment on the GA EPD’s Comprehensive Nutrient Permitting Strategy Roadmap. I am located in the middle Chattahoochee region along the Georgia-Alabama border south of Atlanta and are concerned about the impacts to our reservoir, including Walter F. George (WFG). This waterway is rich in natural, ecological and recreational resources important to the economic viability of this region.
The Chattahoochee River through Columbus and downstream has been the foundation for strong economic benefit for decades. Of particular interest relative to the nutrient strategy is fishing in WFG up to the rapids in Columbus. Millions of dollars in economic benefit are generated annually due to our healthy lakes and river.
A healthy lake depends on nutrients to protect and propagate its aquatic life. Fishing, both recreational and tournament, are economically vital to much of the middle Chattahoochee region. We are deeply concerned that unnecessary reduction in nutrients will have a detrimental impact on our fishing. Currently, the fishing is good.
A reduction in nutrients could easily result in fewer and smaller fish and hence, less economic benefit from fishermen.
How can you assure that the proposed nutrient strategy will improve and not harm fishing, the primary recreational activity of Walter F. George Reservoir and surrounding fisheries?
Thank you for considering my comment and concerns.
