All are welcome to a book chat on Freckles by Gene Stratton-Porter.

Calling all fans of Gene Stratton Porter! Or, if you've heard the name, but haven't had a chance to become familiar with the work of this Indiana author and naturalist... now is your chance! The selection for our June 11 book chat will be the 1904 novel Freckles.

Set in the Limberlost Swamp, this story is about a one-handed, orphaned boy who finds purpose as a timber guard, falls in love with the "Swamp Angel," and learns to appreciate the natural world. The story follows the resilient protagonist as he overcomes his disability and past hardships, finding love and self-worth while protecting valuable timber and encountering the swamp's wildlife, making it a classic tale of courage, nature, and self-discovery.

The book is available for borrowing through the library, both as a physical book or an e-book or audiobook on the Libby app, or available for purchase at the gift shop of the Limberlost State Historic Site, which is Gene Stratton Porter's former log cabin home in Geneva.

We are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the first land purchase of what would become the Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve and the beginning of the Limberlost Conservation Area.

This photo is of Ken Brunswick in 1997 before the restoration began. We owe a debt to Ken who had the vision of restoring the wetlands.
