Our Zonta Club of Geneva President, Emilie, wrote a powerful message on our monthly newsletter. We encourage you to read it, give it some thought, and let us know how we can all make a difference in this beautiful world of ours. Our next meeting is December 19th at The Rose Petal Inn, in Geneva, NY. Let us know if you are interested in attending, as we would love to welcome you.
"As we close 2018, we are grateful for the fortunate
circumstances that we are Americans. Zonta has blessed
many women around the world, yet we know there is more
work to be done. I am asking those in our club who are
willing to write a letter to the editor of the FINGER LAKES
TIMES and other weekly papers to do so by emphasizing the goals of Zonta in its campaign quest to end the Violence Against Women.
This year the focus is on ending Child Marriage which
affects 12 million girls worldwide. While we may think that
New York State is progressive in its laws of preventing child marriage, it was only in 1977 that New York raised the age of marriage for females to 18, although a 17 year old can marry with the consent of the New York Supreme Court or Family Court Process. Today, around the world, females are still being married at 10 and younger!
Protecting women and children is still an obvious basic
need. The United Nations on December 20, 1993 passed its "Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against
Women." This declaration is as relevant today as it was in
1993. Among its statements is: "Women are entitled to the
equal enjoyment and protection of all human rights and
fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social,
cultural, civil or any other field." As I celebrate the
beginning of a New Year, I join with our club in promoting
and actively working to create a world where women are
equal and equally protected."
