Despurate House Cats

Despurate House Cats New Milford, CT 501(c)(3) nonprofit cat rescue. Saving at-risk street cats through TNR, foster, rehab & adoption. Kneading hearts, needing homes.

Adoption & donation links below. Welcome, and thank you for your interest and support! My name is Carley, and I’ve lived in New Milford, CT, my entire life. From a young age, I've had a deep passion for everything feline (and poodle!). My first cat, Tigger, grew up alongside me, and since then, I've dedicated myself to rescuing and fostering countless cats. My home is full of love, with multiple c

ats and dogs living together in harmony. Beyond my love for cats, I enjoy learning, hiking, indulging in comfort TV shows, and exploring my passion for the culinary arts through cooking and baking. However, my heart truly lies in rescuing and advocating for animals in need. This passion drives me to create a safe haven for homeless and at-risk cats in our community. Professionally, I’ve spent many years as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, gaining hands-on experience in animal care and veterinary medicine. This, combined with my background in customer service, has allowed me to foster a welcoming environment for both people and animals. I’m also proud of my extensive rescue work, having fostered and rehabilitated countless animals, including those with special needs. As the founder, I’m deeply committed to creating a rescue that serves as a sanctuary for adoptable cats, while also fostering a sense of community among animal lovers. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these animals and work towards a brighter, more compassionate future for all.

Guys I've been keeping a secret...
You may have noticed the lack of Carol content.
Well, she's off to her forever home. It took me a few days to cope. I mean I literally birthed and baby bird' her.
I knew when Carol finally spread her wings it would only be to someone special, whom I know and can trust with my most fragile little girl. Well, she's not so fragile anymore, I suppose...
Anyway, Carol is now called Mable and her mom Carole (ha!) and her are completely smitten with each other. She even has a shepherd to baby bird her now!

Important facts about microchips!
Each year, hundreds of thousands of stray cats are found & brought to shelters throughout the Unites States.
Only 2% of cats are returned to their owners if they are not microchipped. Compared to 40% of cats that are microchipped are returned to their home.
The percentage of returned cats would be much higher if they all had correct registration information.
If they can’t contact you, your cat can still end up in the shelter microchipped.
Reminder: Make sure the registration is correct and up to date!
Do you have any stories of a cat that was returned because they had a microchip?

If you've been following since the beginning, you remember Saint. Our first house cat.
Saint was from a colony in Hartford and had a wicked URI... Then a polyp on his larynx... That kept coming back. Again. And again. Then a collapsed larynx... Then the asthma...
Simple to say, Saint has been quiet and not adoptable. He has been living with me for the past 15 months being a brother to the other cats who come in.
When I noticed him coughing more a few weeks ago, I called his friends at Guardian Vet Specialist to get him in for a check. In my head, his polyp that we had removed was back despite the surgeries and Pred.
ALAS, he is doing better than ever and is just dealing with feline asthma. After a year, his polyp has shown no evidence of returning, meaning he likely will not need any further procedures. We will be adjusting his medications and teaching him how to use an inhaler (this will also manage this trachea issues alongside his asthma), stay tuned to see how mask training goes...
Then, the fact that his polyp has not returned has me thinking maybe he will be... adoptable?! Of course, he would need a special adopter who is willing to deal with all of his BS and ideally lives within an hour of his friends at Guardian in case of emergency or future check ups.
We still have weeks of mask training and medication adjustments until we get there though.
Stay tuned!

As the costs of pet ownership continue to rise, more domesticated cats are ending up on the streets alongside the ever-growing feral populations.
