This may not look like much, sparse tangled trees, low vegetation, but appearances can be deceiving. This is an important wetland that sits adjacent to Grand Lake in Presque Isle County. Filled with old cedars, sphagnum moss, and some of the most delicate native flowers 🪻, the Dault Nature Preserve is small but mighty. It is not much of a hike, and your shoes will definitely get wet, but it is worth the stop to marvel at nature's systems for flood mitigation.

Two weeks until the Mushroom Foray. Join HeadWaters Land Conservancy and the Pigeon River Country Discovery Center on September 13, 10am to 1pm, for a hands on morning of mushroom identification followed by a guided hike. Bring boots ready to get dirty, a basket or bag if you want to collect, and your curiosity, this one is fun for the whole family. Registration is required and spots are limited.

Join Dianne Farner from HeadWater's Land Conservancy for a family-friendly mushroom identification workshop. Take a short hike to see what wild fungi you can find. Compare your finds with other participants.

We had the absolute pleasure to help the Au Sable River Property Owners Alliance with purple loosestrife removal for the second year. Purple loosestrife is an invasive plant that grows along river and lake edges, basically it will live in any wetland. Though the flowers are pretty they crowd out our native look alike, the blue vervain. If you live near water and see any of these, rip them out and throw in trash bags.

We are proud to share that the Hess Nature Preserve Expansion is officially complete.

Together with our partners and supporters, we have protected more than 200 acres of one of northeast Michigan's most significant coastal landscapes. This is a lasting investment in clean water, wildlife habitat, and public access for future generations.
