HeadWaters Land Conservancy

HeadWaters Land Conservancy Protecting the natural diversity and beauty of northeast Michigan The largest natural lands left in all of Lower Michigan are right here in our back yard.

Not to mention many of Michiganโ€™s most important watersheds, including the Lake Huron Shoreline. When these precious lands are misused or overdeveloped we all suffer - those who are attracted to the region for its beauty and numerous outdoor activities, and those whose livelihoods stem from its abundant resources.

Michigan's most celebrated cold-water trout river runs through the heart of our service area, and we have an opportunity to protect 67 acres of riparian land along its banks in Crawford County. Keeping this corridor intact means cleaner water, healthier fish habitat, and undeveloped habitat. We're just getting started on our $500,000 goal, your support makes a real difference.

Support the conservation of 67 acres along the Au Sable River. Help us protect vital ecosystems and preserve this natural treasure.

From 300 feet up, you can see something most people never get to witness ๐Ÿ‘€

This wetland complex in Ogemaw County โ€” our newest acquisition project โ€” tells its whole story from above. The bright green duckweed signals clean, productive water. The dead standing trees (snags) are prime real estate for wood ducks and woodpeckers. The shrubby edges? Critical cover for songbirds and amphibians.

Wetlands this intact are rare. Weโ€™re working to make sure this one stays that way โ€” permanently. ๐Ÿ’š

Once covering millions of acres across the Midwest, oak savannas, open parklike landscapes of fire-adapted oaks and native grasses, have been reduced to a tiny fraction of their original range. They support an extraordinary diversity of wildlife and wildflowers, many found nowhere else. Protecting and restoring savanna habitat is one of the most urgent, and overlooked, conservation priorities of our time. A great example is our Luneack Preserve in Oscoda County.

Did you know? ๐ŸŒพ Agricultural land conservation isn't just about pretty fields โ€” it's about food security. HeadWaters protects regionally important farmland in northeast Michigan, helping ensure family farms remain viable and don't get converted to development. Local farms = local food = a resilient community. ๐Ÿšœ

Today we're officially launching our campaign to permanently protect the Ogemaw Parcel: 30 acres of pristine wetland, tamarack bog, and wildlife habitat just outside Rose City, Michigan.
The total acquisition goal is $40,000 โ€” and every dollar goes directly to securing this land forever.
This is conservation at the landscape scale. Be part of a legacy of land protection!
