What could access to Potters Point look like as a public nature preserve?

Our campaign to protect Potters Point has two main goals: Secure public access to 41 acres and 8,000 feet of Lake Huron coastline, and safeguard its incredible natural resources found nowhere else on Earth.

Potential activities include hiking, wildlife viewing, guided educational experiences for students and community groups, and paddle access to Misery Bay. The goal is to make this spectacular coastline accessible to everyone while preserving the sensitive habitats that make it worth protecting in the first place.

We hit the airwaves this week to share how we're working to protect 41 acres and 8,000 feet of Lake Huron frontage in Alpena.

Potters Point is one of the last places where Great Lakes marshland, coastal fens and conifer swamp exist together largely undisturbed, making it one of the most ecologically significant parcels along Lake Huron.

This rare combination of habitats supports an extraordinary range of native species including dwarf lake iris, ram's head lady's-slipper, otters, eagles, carnivorous plants and more. Potters Point serves as an essential stopover site for migrating birds in spring and fall. Protecting this property would complete a connected ring of protected lands around nearly all of Misery Bay, securing its place as one of the most intact Great Lakes coastal ecosystems in the region.

This property is privately owned and for sale. We have the opportunity now to protect it forever. Go to huronpines.org/potterspoint to join this effort.

The time is now. The place is Potters Point. Let's work together to protect it forever.

Potters Point is just fifteen minutes from downtown Alpena but it feels like the edge of the world. These 41 acres on the emerald shores of Misery Bay represent something increasingly rare in Michigan: intact coastal wilderness with nearly 8,000 feet of shoreline harboring ecosystems and species found nowhere else on Earth. Today, this irreplaceable property is privately owned and for sale.

We need to raise $1.5 million to buy and permanently protect Potters Point as a public nature preserve. Support this cause today at huronpines.org/potterspoint.

Today marks A 25 YEAR MILESTONE for our leader & friend, Brad Jensen, who joined Huron Pines in 2001 and continues to champion major conservation initiatives as our Executive Director.

Brad's leadership has led to 400 projects totaling $55 million in investments across Northern Michigan. During his tenure, Huron Pines has removed 8 dams and restored 150 road/stream crossings to reconnect our rivers & streams. Thousands of acres of wild lands are now in public hands as part of the Pigeon River Country State Forest, and another 2,200 acres are open to explore as Huron Pines nature preserves showcasing some of the best Michigan has to offer. (We've got another one in the works right now, so stay tuned ...)

Brad understands successful projects need people who appreciate the importance of conservation and commit their time and energy to it. Our Huron Pines AmeriCorps and seasonal stewardship programs helped launch nearly 400 careers, many of whom continue to serve important conservation roles throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Brad travels the state to build relationships with local leaders and explore new ways to conserve and protect our shared natural resources together. Countless volunteers have given their time to on-the-ground projects that he inspired and they made happen.

We've grown a lot since 2001, from four staff to a team of 20, all working to meet the needs of communities we serve. Brad's a humble guy who puts his trust in those he's brought together to get it done -- that's us, and we love what we do.

Brad likes canoe trips in quiet places. At staff gatherings he's bound to wander into the woods on a whim. When it's time for work, he's on it.

Here's to Brad on this landmark occasion. Congratulations!

⚠️ATTENTION ROSE CITY ⚠️

Demolition of Sanback Dam begins this week. For your safety, please stay out of the fenced areas of Metcalf Park while this project is underway.

We appreciate the community's support of this effort to restore Beechwood Creek and we'll post frequent updates as the project progresses.
