Learn about Our Neighbors, the Black Bears

Tiny start: Baby bear cubs are born super tiny and blind, smaller than a kitten! Mama bear takes care of them while she's snoozing through winter.

Climbing school: As cubs grow, they learn to climb trees using their cool curvy claws, like built-in spikes! This helps them escape danger or just chill way up high for a nap.

Speedy Bears: Bears might look slow and chunky, but they can run super fast, almost as fast as a car going 30 miles an hour!

Super sniffer: A bear's nose is amazing, way better than a dog's! It can smell food from over a mile away.

Sleepy time: When winter comes, bears go into a super deep sleep called hibernation. They don't eat, drink, or even go to the bathroom for months! Their body just lives off the fat they stored up.

Big eater: Bears munch on all sorts of things like berries, nuts, bugs, and fish. Most of their food is plants, like a salad with some extra crunch. They love berries!

Come pick berries like a bear this August at HOWL Summer Camp!

TRAVERSE CITY, MI- HOWL is out of hibernation. After years running camps in California's redwood forests and working with youth in East Africa, we're back. This summer we're bringing two outdoor adventure camps to Northern Michigan. Children hike, track wildlife, journal, play games, make nature art, and generally have a wild time. Register and pay in full by July 1 and save 10%; siblings get 10% off too.

This summer we're running two sessions. Wild About Nature Art Camp is nestled among cedars along a creek at Optimist Cabin Land near Chums Corner. Campers paint, sculpt clay, sketch, and make art from what they find on the forest floor. Forest Adventures Camp runs out of beautiful Camp Greilick, where kids track animals, read the landscape, and explore some genuinely great trails. Both camps are rooted in the belief that kids who play outside become people who care about nature and the environment.
