“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.” I Peter 4:12-13, NIV
The followers of Jesus Christ will endure differing forms of persecution in this world. The Christians in Peter’s day were being killed for their faith. The Roman Empire was determined to eradicate the Christian faith from the world. Peter’s letter encourages the believers to stay strong in the midst of trials. In fact, he tells them to rejoice in the midst of the trials. How can we rejoice in trials?
First, when you suffer for Christ, you grow closer to Christ. To suffer for Christ is to share in a small way in the sufferings He endured on the cross. There is a deeper fellowship among those who endure persecution for their faith. Jesus grouped those who suffer for His name with the prophets who suffered before them (Matthew 5:12). It is often in suffering that we draw nearer to God.
Second, when we suffer for Christ, we look forward to the coming of Christ. Peter refers to this as “the revelation of His glory.” The promise of the return of Jesus is even more sweeter when life is difficult and our faith is tested. The early church looked with great anticipation to Jesus’ return. He said in Revelation 22:20, “Yes, I am coming soon.” And John responds, “Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus!” The Lord wants us to live longing for His return!
Gather the family this morning and join us for worship as we celebrate what Christ has accomplished on the cross and look forward to His return! We will observe the Lord’s Supper this morning in both services. We are to remember the coming of Christ every time we partake of this special meal. I hope to see you this morning with Christ’s Church!
