When: The First and Third Tuesday, 7:15 a.m. Where: Scott County Park and Golf Course Clubhouse The Rotary Club of Scott County Virginia was organized through efforts of the Rotary Club of Downtown Kingsport and the Rotary Club of Kingsport, Tennessee. Charlie Seay, then District Governor of Rotary District 757 (later to become 7570) and a member of the Rotary Club of Kingsport, provided the lea

dership in forming the new club. Evans of the Kingsport Club to be his representative in working with prospective members to build the new club. Joe Fuller, a member of the sponsoring club in Kingsport, also worked to organize the club in his home county. He resigned from the Kingsport club to join his Scott County neighbors in Rotary. He was elected charter president of the new club, serving two consecutive terms as president. The first provisional meeting of the new club was held at the former Gateway Restaurant in Moccasin Gap, Virginia on November 1, 1988 at 7:15 a.m. The club was chartered with 26 members including eight women. Rotary was founded in 1905 in Chicago by Paul Harris, a lawyer, and three other businessmen. Rotary, the world’s first and most international service club, was named “Rotary” because the members met in rotation at their various places of business. When President Emeritus Paul Harris passed away on Jan. 27, 1947, his dream had grown to 6,000 clubs. Since then, the organization has grown to more than 34,000 clubs with 1.2 million members in 200 countries and geographical areas. The Rotary motto “Service Above Self” conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
