Our member Alecia recently visited the gravesite of her Patriot ancestor Aaron Levi Deviney.

Aaron served in the Tryon Militia in 1775. In 1776 Tories burned his home. In 1780 he fought under General Griffith Rutherford at the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill.

Shortly after the battle, Aaron’s company was ordered to the head of Cane Creek to intercept British Colonel Patrick Ferguson’s troops. Aaron set out to contact and warn the Burke County militia, but along the way, he was captured by three of Ferguson’s spies.

For the next 13–14 days, Aaron remained a prisoner. During that time, his wife, Sarah, pleaded with Colonel Ferguson to release her husband. When her pleas eventually turned to tears, Ferguson relented, reportedly declaring that he would “rather see 20 dead men than one woman in tears.”

Behind every Patriot’s story are the families who also endured the uncertainty, fear, and sacrifices of the Revolutionary War. Sarah’s determination to bring her husband home is a powerful reminder of the courage of the women who stood beside the men who fought for independence.

Thank you, Alecia, for honoring your ancestor and helping keep his story alive. Remembering our Patriots means remembering not only those who fought, but also the families who sacrificed alongside them. 🇺🇸

Photographer Ellen Devenny took these beautiful photographs yesterday commemorating the Battle of Kings Mountain. In 1930, almost 100 years ago our chapter Major William Chronicle NSDAR placed this marker where Chronicle died fighting for our freedom. Our member Alecia’s 6 great grandfather, Davis Whiteside was mortally wounded and died from his wounds from the battle.

Today, members Lynne, Charlene, and Alecia attended the Commemoration of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The battle that changed the tide of the American Revolution.

What made today especially meaningful was honoring the men whose names are forever connected to our chapter.

Major William Chronicle, our namesake, bravely led alongside William Rabb, John Mattox, and John Boyd, all of whom lost their lives fighting for American independence.

Chronicle was just 25 years old.

It is recorded that as he commanded his troops from horseback, he looked toward the South Fork Boys, raised his hat, and commanded:

“Face to the Hill!”

Moments later, he was struck in the chest by a musket ball and died instantly.

Command then fell to Major Frederick Hambright. Lynne’s 7 x great-grandfather. Hambright led the South Fork Boys and the Lincoln County militia up the mountain.

He had already been wounded three times, including a musket ball that tore into his thigh. The wound was so severe that blood poured down into his boot and onto his horse. Yet Hambright refused to stop.

He led the final charge.

Bleeding from his wounds, he called to his men:

“Haza! My brave boys, fight on for a few minutes more and this battle will be over!”

And it was.

Patrick Ferguson was killed, and the victory at Kings Mountain became a turning point in the American Revolution.

After the ceremony, our members made sure that the men were not forgotten. We placed flowers at the graves of Major William Chronicle, William Rabb, John Mattox, and John Boyd. Four men who gave their lives for the cause of American independence.

Our chapter, their legacy lives on.

As Revolutionary War reenactors, they bring history to life by stepping into the footsteps of those who lived it. What a wonderful way to honor our past and help others experience history firsthand!
