The Era of "Super Saturday" at the US Open

Before 2015, the US Open followed a tournament schedule unlike any other in sports: Super Saturday.

On the second Saturday of September, fans were treated to both men's semifinal matches back-to-back, followed immediately by the women's singles final under the lights.

While it made for incredible television, it was one of the most grueling physical tests in tennis history. A men's player could battle through a five-set, four-hour semifinal on Saturday afternoon and have less than 24 hours of recovery before walking back onto Arthur Ashe Stadium for the championship final on Sunday afternoon.

The schedule has since evolved to allow for proper recovery days, but Super Saturday remains one of the most legendary chapters in modern tennis lore.

🎾 August Player of the Month – Ximena Díaz

We are proud to recognize Ximena Díaz as our August Player of the Month!

Ximena has been playing tennis for less than a year, yet she has already achieved incredible results. Since joining United Tennis, she hasn’t missed a single practice, consistently training three days a week.

Her discipline, perseverance, and commitment paid off when, after just seven months of playing tennis, she won her first official USTA tournament in South Carolina. Following that victory, Ximena continued working hard throughout the summer, becoming one of the most consistent and dedicated players in our program.

One of the things we love most about Jimena is that she never wants to leave the court—her passion for the game is truly inspiring and makes us incredibly proud. Ximena, your hard work, positive attitude, and determination are setting an amazing example for everyone around you.

From all of us at United Tennis, congratulations on being our August Player of the Month! We can’t wait to see everything you’ll accomplish next! 🎉

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know that night matches at Grand Slams weren’t always a thing? Back in 1975 at Forest Hills, the US Open became the very first Grand Slam in history to introduce night matches under the stadium lights!

Fast-forward to today: Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, NY, holds over 23,000 roaring fans, making it the largest tennis-specific stadium in the world. Between the roaring crowds, the city skyline, and the sheer intensity on court, a US Open night session feels more like an electric stadium rock concert than a quiet tennis match!
_____________
