🛟 Summer's over, but safety is always in season.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 in the U.S., and one of the top causes of accidental death for kids up to 14 (CDC). It can happen quickly and quietly, often within seconds and with little splashing.

As Lake Michigan cools this fall, cold water adds a second danger: 🥶

🔹 Cold water shock hits in the first minute, causing gasping and panic breathing even in strong swimmers.
🔹 Swim failure can set in within about 10 minutes as arms and legs lose strength.
🔹 Hypothermia follows, and children lose body heat faster than adults.

Keep your family safe:
✅ Put a life jacket on kids near the water, no matter the season
✅ Designate a Water Watcher who stays within arm's reach of little ones
✅ Check the weather and water conditions before you go
✅ Know where the nearest safety station is

Last night's Water Safety Social — Keeping Our Community Safe — was an evening of learning, sharing, and connecting with friends and neighbors, and we couldn't be more grateful!

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. William Ramos, a Miller native and Water Safety Social Board member, for sharing his passion and knowledge of water safety, along with practical tips each of us can use to help keep our community safe while enjoying our beautiful lakefront. 💙

And thank you to everyone who joined us at St. Barnabas. Your time, your questions, and your commitment to water safety make our community stronger. Together, we're making a difference. 🙌

One simple takeaway to carry with you this season: Designate a Water Watcher! 👀🌊

You can find us at Fest in the First Gary on Saturday, October 17th to pick up water watcher cards and lanyards.

🌊 High wave action and dangerous currents expected at Miller beaches. Waves 3 to 6 ft expected.

📍 Lake and Porter Counties.

⏰ Sunday morning through Sunday evening.

Swimming conditions will be life threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers.

ACTIONS

Remain out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions and do not venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other shoreline structures.

Community Update

Due to the recent storm and widespread power outages throughout our community, we have made the decision to reschedule our event originally planned for Thursday, August 13th.

Please watch Facebook for details about our next Water Safety Social on Thursday, September 17th at 6:00 p.m. at St. Barnabas. Topic: Keeping our community safe. We are honored to welcome Dr. Bill Ramos as our guest speaker. A Miller native, Dr. Ramos, who also serves on the Water Safety Social Board, has traveled the world sharing his passion and knowledge for water safety. We look forward to an evening of learning, sharing, and connecting with our community.

In the meantime, our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by the storm. ❤️ Please take care of yourselves, check in on your neighbors, and lend a helping hand wherever you can.

This is what makes our community so special. In difficult times, we come together, look out for one another, and remind each other that we are never alone.

Water Quality Alert: On Tuesday, August 11th, 2026, testing right indicated that E. coli levels at Marquette Park and Wells Street exceeded water quality standards for swimming. Due to an increased risk of contracting an illness while swimming, consider staying out of the water at these beaches until further notice from Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Gary Sanitary District.
