In the early 1980s, the former Gary Rescue Mission closed its doors to homeless men. Anderson, along with his congregation, other churches, neighborhood associations, and concerned individuals accepted the challenge of reopening a homeless shelter for men and veterans in Gary, IN. The City of Gary and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided funding to renovate the former t
ire shop into a livable space where the residents can transition from homelessness to living independently. On March 16, 1986, Brothers' Keeper, Inc. opened its doors at its current site, which has a 26-bed dorm, a kitchen, shower rooms, and office and dining areas. The facility houses homeless veterans and unhoused men. Brothers' Keeper's current Executive Director W. Isaac Mootye, its Board of Directors, employees, an array of churches, foundations, partnerships, and caring individuals, are continuing Rev. Anderson's legacy.

Helping those in need, especially homeless men and veterans is our primary goal. After all, we are our Brothers' Keeper.

Brothers' Keeper is dedicated to providing shelter for men in need while also encouraging success. By sharing resources, providing nourishment, guidance, and temporary housing we navigate clients from homelessness to prosperity for themselves and their communities.

Brothers' Keeper, Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is a viable resource in the Northwest Indiana Region where homeless veterans and unhoused men have come for shelter since 1986. Our food pantry is open to the community on the following days/times:
Monday: 11 A.M. - 3 P.M. Thursday: 11 A.M. - 3 P.M. Friday: 11 A.M.- 3 P.M. The food pantry is closed on Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday, and all major holidays.
