One of the most difficult moments when you’re learning from the choreographer is when you have to do the choreography alone. It’s a pivotal moment, but one that is essential to the growth of any artist.

Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our hearts in our people and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

I have faith that I am doing that which the Creator and the Ancestors would have me do. I have faith and believe that my sister, Thea Barnes, (Miss T) is with me always and supports and guides my path, both as a performing artist, as a teacher, as a guide to our young people, our children, and as I move always forward with her Fund, TBLF. She continued on after 12 years with Martha and spent 18 years in London as the Resident Dance Supervisor for the “Lion King.” A true testimony to her being a fierce and uncompromising force. Remember anything or any changes you want to occur starts with your belief, your faith, your Imani!! Find it or rediscover it!

Happy New Year from TBLF executive team!!

Kuumba (Creativity)To do always as much as we can to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

African-Americans in this country are notable for our contributions to all Arts. But we do more than dance, sing, write, act and play sports. If you are unaware of the contributions and inventions of African-Americans, if you are unaware of inventions that have contributed significantly to your day-to-day living and have contributed to our ability to live healthier lives here is a link to get you started.

Creativity must thrive for inventions to be constantly created. This is the power of creativity.

The move to make nursing not a profession begs the question of who will be in that ICU standing on their feet 12+ hours, running by the nurses station to throw some water down their throat, forgetting to go to the bathroom because they don’t want to leave their patient, no eating, working well pass the end of their shift to ensure that their patient survives, and that the family is taken care of as well. We all need to be afraid, be very afraid of what happens when decisions are made not to go to nursing school because there is no money to help you get there. I always said and will continue to say that no one appreciates a nurse or teacher until there aren’t any. It’s that same saying that we hear often from our Dentist, “If you ignore them, they will go away.” Ignore what’s being done to the teaching and nursing professions and they will go away. I can talk because I am both. I love working my entire career in a MICCU and I love teaching. I am what I do. I want to see generations come behind to replace me and all the other professionals.

Nia (Purpose)
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together. My family and I had the pleasure of supporting this circus by buying a ticket and putting our butts in the seats. Sadly, there were very few people of color in the audience. Personally, I don’t particularly care for circuses, but we must learn to support our businesses to ensure that they thrive and continue. So what happened, the performer plucked me out of the audience because he said he wanted men with muscles and I said women have muscles too, and he heard me!!

Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams, an all-Ethiopian troupe known for vibrant music, high-energy acrobatics, and juggling, running from July 10 – August 3 at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on the Pier, offering a joyful, family-friendly show with Ethiopian flair.

Today is the second day of Kwanzaa. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. Walk always with self-determination toward your goal. We here at TBLF strive to help you reach and be successful at that goal.!! #
