The Navy was born on October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized a small fleet to challenge British dominance at sea.
Early operations included tactical raids and supply disruptions during the American Revolution, proving the strategic value of naval warfare.
The Department of the Navy was formally established in 1798, ensuring a permanent naval presence.
The Navy’s birthday was officially recognized in 1972 by Admiral Elmo Zumwalt to foster pride and professionalism across the fleet.

USS Michigan (1908): First modern battleship, showcasing advanced naval engineering.
Lexington-class carriers (1927): First operational aircraft carriers, revolutionizing naval aviation.
Guided missile systems: Introduced post-WWII, transforming precision strike capabilities.
The Navy expanded from 790 ships in 1941 to over 6,700 by 1945, becoming a dominant force in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Pivotal victories at Midway, Leyte Gulf, and throughout the Battle of the Atlantic secured Allied supply lines and crippled enemy fleets.
The Navy has played a decisive role in every major conflict, from the Revolutionary War to Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and beyond.
Its motto, “Non sibi sed patriae” — “Not for self, but for country” — continues to guide generations of Sailors in defense of liberty.
