Happy 250th Birthday to the United States Navy!

On October 13, 2025, we honor two and a half centuries of unmatched maritime service, innovation, and sacrifice that have safeguarded America’s freedom and shaped global history.

The Navy was born on October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized a small fleet to challenge British dominance at sea.

Early operations included tactical raids and supply disruptions during the American Revolution, proving the strategic value of naval warfare.

The Department of the Navy was formally established in 1798, ensuring a permanent naval presence.

The Navy’s birthday was officially recognized in 1972 by Admiral Elmo Zumwalt to foster pride and professionalism across the fleet.

USS Holland (1898): First commissioned submarine, launching underwater warfare.

USS Michigan (1908): First modern battleship, showcasing advanced naval engineering.

Lexington-class carriers (1927): First operational aircraft carriers, revolutionizing naval aviation.

Guided missile systems: Introduced post-WWII, transforming precision strike capabilities.

The Navy expanded from 790 ships in 1941 to over 6,700 by 1945, becoming a dominant force in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

Pivotal victories at Midway, Leyte Gulf, and throughout the Battle of the Atlantic secured Allied supply lines and crippled enemy fleets.

The Navy has played a decisive role in every major conflict, from the Revolutionary War to Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and beyond.

Its motto, “Non sibi sed patriae” — “Not for self, but for country” — continues to guide generations of Sailors in defense of liberty.
Events like the Titans of the Sea Presidential Review showcase the
Navy’s enduring maritime power and honor its legacy.

From wooden frigates to nuclear-powered carriers, the U.S. Navy has stood as a pillar of strength, innovation, and honor. As we mark this historic milestone, we salute the Sailors past and present who have kept the watch and carried the flag across every ocean.

Fair winds and following seas!

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed annually on the third Friday of September to honor and remember the more than 83,000 American service members who are still listed as Prisoners of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA). Established in 1979, the day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by these individuals and the enduring pain felt by their families. It underscores the nation's commitment to achieving full accountability and bringing every missing service member home. The iconic POW/MIA flag, bearing the words “You Are Not Forgotten,” is prominently displayed across the country, including at the White House, military installations, and public buildings, symbolizing national respect and remembrance. If you know of an American service member who is still listed as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action, we'd love to hear about them.
